Both shares and mutual funds can give you great +ve or -ve returns. For a novice, I would advice you to invest in mfs, which are managed by experts and chances of loss are minimal. Investing in shares involves huge risk. |

Both Mutual funds and Shares yield very good returns.
Mutual funds take your money ( and from others) and invest in shares. The choice of shares are decided by fund managers. They select shares with extensive study on shares and market. The returns are shared by all investors.
Here the risk is somewhat minimized when compared to investing directly in shares as fund managers are dedicated for this job and they do their research well before investing in any share. Ofcourse it may go wrong rarely.
Equity mutual funds, on average, returns about 30% to 50% and even above 100 % per year.
In shares, you decide which share to invest yourselves. Sometimes you could get 50% or 100% in few days and the same would happen in loss too.
If you do not know anything about shares, better go for mutual funds as risk there is considerable reduced. |

Define "good returns"!
Short-term or long-term?
You hit the nail right on the head... YOU don't have knowledge!
So the obvious solution to answer your question would be to do what??? |

Research has shown that Shares can give you highest returns if u invest systematically.
Mutual funds can give u decent returns, but it really depends on which fund u are choosing to invest in.

direct investment in shares may bring better yield but u need devote more time and efforts to study the market and operate. the mutual funds are indirect investment in equity. here u entrust your funds to mutual funds who take expert decisions of behalf of investore. for a busy person who cannot devote his time exclusively to share market, mutual fund route is better, safer and also likey to yield handsome results. |
