Who decides whether stock value should increase or decrease?

The market decides - supply and demand.

if more people want to buy the stock than sell it.the price goes up.......opposit happens and the price goes down

bizzbagg
no one person does. it all depends on the companies finances. a good solid would be valued more then the weak companies. if the company is financial sound,then use this little formula to find out how much you should pay per share.

10 + .5 x ROE

example= SUTRON CORP (STRN)

10 + .5 x ROE
10 + .5 x 28
.5 x 28= 14
10+14=24
24 x .51 = $12.24 per share

ESP= .51

todays closing price= $10.56
i would consider this a buy candidate,because its undervalued.
i hope this helps. i do not own stock in this company.

Any stockholder does, by their actions. If they think a recent development (either in global circumstances, or by the company) will make the company more valuable, they'll be more willing to hold onto their shares, or buy at a higher price. If something negative happens, people want to unload the stock, and the price will drop to whatever point people are willing to purchase it at. It's rare that a company loses all value, so it's usually that an action creates or diminishes value, and the stock, or purchase price, or market rate, or whatever you want to call it goes up a bit or goes down a bit.

What determines the price of the stock is how much the company is currently earning in profits and what I, as an investor, think that company will make profits in the future. If investors believe the company will make more profits in the future, than the stock price should go up. If the companies ability to make more profits in the future looks doubtful, than the stock price should fall. Earnings are the driver of stock prices. That's it.

The market/buyer decides. This is the case in everything bought and sold in a free economy. Once you buy something, anything; you are a contributor in setting that price mark.

girlygurl23
Its decided by the market(composed of various people interested in buying a stock).

Lets say there is information that the firm will have higher profit the next year. In response to this information, people may want to purchase more stock, and because of the demand the price will go up.

On the contrary- if there is news that the firm will loose money next year, the response might be to sell the stock now.

Certainly there are other factors, such as political environment and economic expection that might affect the value of a stock.

Actually, this is done by the individual investors.
Say that you own 100 shares of xyz stock, which you bought at $1.00 per share. I would like to buy that stock, so I offer you $1.25 per share. You can either sell it to me, and make a $25.00 profit, or not. If you chose not to sell, then I may offer you more. So you sell it to me at $1.50/share. Later we both find out that the xyz company has developed a widget that will be the most profit making widget in the world. So you offer to buy 50 shares at $2.00/share. Now is my turn to make a profit, until we find out that the xyz company lied to both of us, and they go bust. Then we go bust too.

The performance of the issue, the current trend of the company the issue represents, and it's history.
