baseball fan | Who is actually profiting when the stock market loses value? |
What I don't understand is that the stock market loses value, heck its been all over the news globally. Now in order for something to lose value, doesnt somebody actually make money on the loss? If person "A" buys an apple at $1.00, person "B" buys the apple from person "A" at $1.50, person "A" made $0.50 on the apple... now person "B" cannot sell the apple at $1.50, but sells the apple to person "C" at $1.25.... and so on, somebody is still making a profit on a loss somewhere along the line.... am I right? or is this fuzzy math.... |

Short sellers make money when the stock market goes down. Instead of buying shares they get a loan on shares. So the broker will loan you shares so you don't pay for it. Then someone else will buy it. So say he loans it to you at 5$ per share and the share price goes down to 2$ per share. Then 5-2=3$ profit. You don't actaully own it at first it is being lent from you before you buy it. |

The only people making money were those that were "shorting stock" That is a very complicated thing where they buy the stock and bet that it will go down. I don't really understand all of it myself. But early on the President stopped that practice in the financial markets so as not to encourage it. So really now, no one makes money when stock goes down. The secret now to making money is to figure out when it has bottomed out so you can buy it just before it starts up again. There will be a lot of fortunes made on that. |

The news media make a big thing out of nothing. There are people profiting from this all the time.
The people who sold when the market was up made money, the people that have cash right now can make money, people that bet the market will go down make money, people who don't sell haven't lost anything.
The real trouble is that people don't know if it's a temporary thing or it simply was a huge bubble. some will profit and some will loose money but if it was all a bubble, then it's sad for those who bought at the top and since everyone is really poorer that they thought, it will probably end up affecting employment, economic growth and everyday life in general. But right now it's simply that they don't have any other news to cover. |

The hedge funds. The crooked maipulates shorting everything out there. Equity owners of ultra short and short etf's are cashing in also. Brokerages with the increased trading volume. |

Your example sort of works in periods of rising prices because in the end someone has to make a profit somewhere! In periods of falling prices people make money on the market by selling short or selling assets and buying them back later at a lower price. For instance I can sell you a apple for $2 today and promise to deliver it in a week. In a week if the price of the apple is $1 and I buy it for you then I made a dollar profit from the transaction. |

if you sell in a down market and the market continues to go down then you won and the buyer lost but if the market stabilizes and comes back up then you lost and the buyer won. if you buy in a down market and the market continues downwards then you lost and the seller won but if the market stabilizes or comes back up then you won and the seller lost. secondary market trades do not form a zero sum game because the total amount of projected value being traded contains a lot of "value creation" and created value can also vanish into thin air from whence it had come in the first place. |

Traders such as myself profit off market skids and gains. I've actually made more money this past two months than I have the entire rest of the year and half of the last. |
