Snowth | Why DO share prices go down as well as up? |
Additional Details Okay - so why will there be LESS of a demand for something?
I'm just trying to draw some sort of comparison with real life. A loaf of bread, for instance, has never gone down in price. Petrol fluctuates a bit but the general trend is always upwards. Etc.

An investment in shares is in some respects the same as a deposit in a building society. There you receive interest for the use of your money and can withdraw the capital at some time in the future.
The share investment is similar but instead of interest you receive dividends. You also hope to withdraw your capital in the future. Most share investors accept a lower rate of return on their investment in exchange for a higher capital repayment in the future.
This is all very nice so long as the company you invested in is making enough profit to pay your dividend and build the company. When there is doubt that profits can be maintained (and therefore there is a risk the dividend may be reduced or eliminated) then the demand for those shares plummets. It doesn't make sense to invest in a company that makes losses. |

If EVERYBODY stopped eating bread today, there would be a huge stockpiled mountain of bread, and the bakers would panic, stop producing it and would be forced to reduce it's price in an attempt to sell what they had, it is exactly the same as stock. |

its a free market with a stockbroker fixing a price dependant on how much stock he has to sell and how many clients want to buy it .If he has more demand than stock to fill orders he puts the price up and if he has more stock than buyers he reduces the price to encourage more buyers. The price is very often fixed before the market opens. You will notice that if a share is tipped as a buy in a newspaper the stock has already jumped in price before the market opens. The broker is anticipating a high demand. |

It's the supply and demand law of economics - the greater a demand for something, in this case shares, the more expensive they will be. And the opposite applies. |

For every sale there is a purchase. If you want to buy you can either buy at the market or make a bid. If you are selling you can ask for a certain price or sell at the market.
So if the highest bid is $ 5.00 and the last sale was at $ 10, the price will go down to $ 5.00 if someone sells it to the bidder. |

the price of shares depends on what buyers think they can get them for, and what sellers think they can get for them.
If there is bad news, then obviously anyone looking to buy will see that the shares should effectively be worth less; the result is that sellers have to lower their offer prices to get a sale.
The same applies on good news and general market movement; the prices simply reflect what participants are willing to give or offer for an exchange at that given point in time; if selling starts happening and bids are getting filled quickly, then bids will be lowered until no further selling occurs as the bids get lower.
Same happens on the buy side; those selling try to up the price as much as possible before sales of their shares cease.
When you sell, someone buys, and vice versa. |

Stocks are a little different, more of an entire business approach rather than just a loaf of bread.
With stock you are buying into a business.
You would want to but stocks in for a turkey farm in January, after Thanksgiving (US) and Christmas when the demand is low, supply doesn't need to be high and the cost of stock is low... You would then sell in November or December when there is high demand and high stock... |
