Why are people buying up Silver and Gold coins at a record pace right NOW????

It is called a hedge against inflation. Gold is almost a thousand dollars an ounce, silver is at $17 an ounce. People figure that if oil prices, food prices, and world demand keep going up, these items will double in a short time. They can be sold anywhere in the world too.

They expect the price of gold and silver to go up which may or may not work out for them.

Their physical presence isn't as easily affected by inflation, rate cuts.... as paper currency is(dollars). Thus their value has a better chance of rising in the long run.

Basically, it depends a little on who is doing the buying. As a couple of people have noted, precious metals prices do rise when inflation rears its ugly head, becoming a hedge. Some people are likely to be doing this. Others, I am sure, are buying these coins at a slight discount below the spot price because a 10% margin means a lot more when gold is at $900 an ounce than $350.

There are probably some coin dealers who are buying on the hope that either the prices will continue to climb or that a lot of coins will be scrapped and melted down, thereby increasing the numismatic value of those coins remaining on the market. Of course, anyone likely to do that isn't going to just buy any coin, but ones where that strategy might work (either rare coins or high-grade coins).

the price of gold is going up and was low

At the highs and lows in the market, and in order for there to BE tops and bottoms in the market the majority have to be wrong.

In order to buy low and sell high to make the most profit, you need to buy when the majority are selling and sell when the majority are buying.

In between the highs and lows you take, ride along with, what the basic upward bias of the market gives.

So says a contrarian investor. ;-)
