Why are stockbrokers admired?

There's a clique that admires anyone who makes a lot of money. A broker is essentially a salesman.

I used to work for two brokers in university. It is a stressful job and not for me, however between commissions and trading I made enough to pay my way through school.

The one broker was 40 at the time and had had three heart attacks.

A good broker can help you plan your finances for retirement, minimize tax, plan to save for your kids education.

The other important thing I learned there, was that the truly wealthy people out there tend to be self-employed, or drive sales. There are very few wealthy employees. This has driven a lot of my career decisions ever since.

I don't admire them.

Because they hold on to inside information that outsiders are not privileged to know. But they are not a impartial lot and more interested in getting brokerage fees and normally tempt you to buy and sell when in fact it is better to hang on to your holdings. They are useful to listen to but 80% to say no to any of their temptations, then you will make money in the long run. Some of them are worse than car salesman.

By whom? I enjoyed the annual tests of pitting brokers against darts and everyday people. When their education and experience gives them a lifetime record against the darts is nearly 50/50, I don't admire them one bit. I believe the WSJ contest was dropped. No surprise there. The darts were pretty close and had no way of buying up their choices to make themselves look better. The public was losing faith in the stockbrokers, who work for the big firms, who pay the WSJ for advertising.

I don't think they are admired. They just trade stocks that people tell them to. I guess it is a link into the stock market.

What planet are you from. Here on Earth stockbrokers and lawyers are the same slime. They're all there for the money, 'yours'.

There's a reason they're called brokers, after you employ them they make you broker.

... it's a tough job. Many get ill from the stress. Good ones make a lot of money for their clients, firm and themselves.

That is a very good question. I often wonder the same thing.I cannot see any valid reason for it, nor is it deserved.

The good ones can help you build wealth. Pay for retirement, children's education, new home. It takes time to build a successfull cliental in that industry which takes dedication and persistence.

kingofwiki
They are one of few who have successfully mounted the beast which is the stock market.

They're admired for the same reason as good chess players, or scrabble genius's funnily enough... Well... there's that and the fact that they can make you a squillion dollars if you give them a couple of percent cut ;-)
