Why do hedge funds have larger fees in comparison to mutual funds??
why ..

Because the manager at a hedge fund is "best of breed" in their specialty and you are buying his expertise with your money. Additionally, mutual funds are heavily regulated and must comply to many SEC standards.

Look at it this way. it is the same reason you pay a lot less to play at a public municipal golf course than you do to join an exclusive county club.

Hedge fund managers seek absolute returns. A positive return under any kind of market conditions. Mutual fund managers seek relative returns. Returns relative to some benchmark, like an index. Its easier to beat a benchmark than it is to achieve returns regardless of market fluctuations. Theoretically if hedge fund managers can obtain returns, regardless of what the market returns, that performance commands higher fees. But hedge funds are private investment funds available only to certain investors. Virtually anyone can invest in a mutual fund.

sparkles
Hedge funds cost more because they generally their stocks are traded more and you are buying hopefully "TALENT".

Hedge funds are not "best of the breed" anymore. There are so many newbies out there that started hedge funds just to make those huge fees.

The ONLY difference between hedge funds and mutual funds is that mutual funds HAVE to tell you what they are doing and hedge funds DONT. The hedge funds that are making the serious 60% returns are the ones that want you to invest a minimum of 1,000,000. The ones started by the newbs that dont knwo what they are doing ask for only 5,000. Sometimes they will piggy back on the name of a successful hedgefund or investor, but it will really be a newbie handling your account. They might tell you that they have made 50% for the last 5 years when maybe one trader made 200% returns for his clients and 4 traders in the same company lost between 30% & 40%.

Presumably because of their expertise. In point of fact, if you look at the entire hedge fund industry, it doesn't look like you get what you pay for overall. At certain specific hedge funds, you do.

Because they only hire the best employees in the World.

Strategist
The difference is this. For mutual funds, basically they practise the long strategy only. That is they purchase stocks when they think it is undervalue and sell stocks when they think it is overvalue.

For hedge funds it is different, it uses advance investment tools like using call/put options.and strategies like short strategy, arbitrage strategy and so on that requires much attention and undertakes more risk.

The adoption of strategy then decides the fees involved.
