skahhh | Why do some stocks go up with no news? Are there investment programs constantly buying these stocks? |

There might be several reasons for a stock going up. 1. Is that it is technically strong. There are many many technical market traders who trade on the technical strength of a stock. 2. mutual funds are continually buying more stocks as more money pours into the funds as a result of 401k plans and other sources of funds. 3. the company may be repurchasing their shares. Many are. That tends to support the price of the shares.
Those are the 3 reasons that I can think of right off the bat. I am certain there are many others also. |

I agree totally with Darryl P. The price of a stock has 99% to do with phychology, 1% with economics. Doubt this? Listen to the news for a few days -- "Today, on rumors of an oil price increase, stocks dropped" and "Today, despite rumors of an oil price increase, stocks climbed". |

It's all about supply and demand. The news is virtually meaningless. |

Yes, some companies just don't have enough stock to go around and investment program managers know which ones they are. |

i think it's because the stock price moves based on people expectation in the futures. |

First of all, there's hardly ever no news at all; and when there's no news there are always rumors.
Also, the stock may look better or worse depending on whether the industry it's in looks better or worse, or on other tangentially related factors like that that might not be immediately evident to you.
There are certainly stock-trading programs active every day that buy and sell based on proprietary algorithms, but they are unlikely to be the *sole* cause. They certainly make prices more volatile sometimes. |
