Why do we refer to the stock market as...?
Why do we refer to the stock market as a Bear market and a Bull market? in other words, how did they get those names?

I think it has to do with the nature of the animal.

A bear will hibernate and be cautious in what it does, whereas a bull will be fast and swift..

Cant really explain it.

When a bear attacks, it comes at you tall on its hind legs and strikes downward. When a bull attacks, it comes at you with its horns low and attacks upward.

Perti68
ok, in relation to stocks, a bear market is a long-term, downward trend of securities, and pessimism causes the trend to be self-sustaining. People sell their positions because of falling value, which in turn causes decreased prices.

a bull market is defined by optimism that a security's price will rise and continue to rise.

basically, a bull market is up and a bear market is down

Bull Market refers to a Trend of Upwards and Bear Market refers a trend of Downwards.

A bull market refers to a trend upwards while a bear market trends downwards. As to why they are called that I'm not sure.

Ted is correct.
