Many factors. One, there is a change in the global investment climate. One of the primary triggers is the huge fear of the United States' economy going into a recession with foreign institutional investors trying to reallocate their funds from risky emerging markets to stable developed markets. Analysts are now expecting a cut in US interest rates.

Hedge funds and FIIs could have been the biggest sellers in the Indian markets, booking profits and making the most of the unprecedented bull run that has dominated the Indian stock market for a long time now.

The current volatility is also linked to global bourses. There is a big correlation among global markets. The presence of hedge funds across asset classes, along with increased global movement of capital, has increased event-related volatility.

Volatility in commodities markets has also significantly affected equity markets.

Let me see???? $8.8 trillion in U.S. federal debt, $500,000,000 per minute on the lost Iraq war, $2.1 trillion in junk grade U.S. consumer debt from bad mortgages and credit cards. A negative savings rate a federal reserve that can not and will not accept a full blown recession is happening. A artificially low unemployment rate were workers have given up looking for well paying jobs and fallen off hte official unemployment rate by cutting the time they qualify for unemployment from 1 year to 6 months. A dramatic up swing in forclosures of homes in the median home range and soon to come a much larger one in the jumbo and super jumbo home loans. Add to that the belief of the rest of the world that President Bush will act unilaterally agianst anyone he is offended by. why should anyone be optomistic???? Looks like a good time to start selling short.

The US is responsible

joe
there are three main reasons

1. Investors in western countries are in fearful of US recession so its affecting foreign investments coming into India. (saying US is responsible is a wrong term, even our stock market is jittery).

2. people have sold out their existing shares in order to buy reliance power ipo, and even new buyers applied for reliance power. when this happens obviously prices of other stocks will fall.

3. as markets fell, investors lost the margin money. they withdrew to prevent further loss. this resulted in market fall.

American are living beyond their means at the expense of asian economy.
American want to control the world economy by such shocks , and Indian govt is suck on such matters

This situation is because of the mad run that the market had been witnessing in the past. Now the corrections seem to be very savage.

This condition was largely motivated by the Global cues from other Asian Peers and mainly from America's slowdown in the economy,
