kenl226 | Why does Pfizer (PFE) stock price drop so much? |
as it announces the acquisition of Weyth. Isn't it a good news for the company? |

They overpaid for wyeth. The companies pipeline is junk. Obama in office. dividend will be cut - which is the biggest reason most owners in the whole kept holding pfe was for its solid dividend. 8,000 jobs slashed.
It's not good to acquire a huge company for a ton of shareholder money, cut a lot of jobs, and slash the one thing pfe holders liked - the divi. |

They also announced that they were cutting their dividend in half at the same time.
A lot of people (me included!) were hanging onto PFE because it's a blue-chip large-cap stock paying a big dividend. Now they've cut it and for that reason the stock is less attractive to hang onto while you hope for a turnaround. |

Weyth's stock shot up as a results because they are being bought by a stronger company. Additionally, Pfizer is about to lose its patents on Viagra and Lipitor, which does not bode well for the company, |

Michael's answer is very close. Now add into the equation the uncertainty of O'bama's new healthcare plan which no-one knows for sure and you have uncertainty for all the health segment. Just too many negatives. |

Because it also cut 19,000 jobs!!! It's still on shaky grounds as far as investors go. |

I suspect there are three main reasons.
1> Dividend cut.
2> Large pharma mergers in the past have not worked out very well.
3> Five banks will finance much of the capital required for the merger with about $23 billion in capital. What is the interest rate in todays market when banks usually are not lending? Will Pfizer be paying double the normal interest rate? |
