Why does our pricing system require the cost of most items to end in $.09, $.19, $.29,.... $.99 , etc ?

Meeds
so that the sellers can get the most out of it... it looks better to buy something for 2.99 rather than 3.00...

so it looks cheaper

Kiri
So it looks cheaper.
A person is more likely to buy something that costs $14.99 over $15 because what they see first is those two first numbers.

It's just what the stores do...

It's not required. It's just an attempt to make us think it's cheaper.

It means using psychology.

Notice how gas stations price everything with 3 digit cents.

Like a gallon of gas looks like it cost $3.05, but really it costs, $3.059, so really almost $3.06. They squeeze that last cent right out of every gallon sold. Sellers just do this to make the price seem cheaper to potential buyers. Psychology to the max!

Because to most consumers when they see something like $14.99 they think $14 not $15. it is based on consumer perception.

Because retailers want you to think you are shopping smarter and paying less than another price that is is an even number like $1, even though its only a penny less.

happyfeet44
I think that if any business rounded it off at 1.00 it would mess up the system. Also those of us that pay tax on soap, etc. it would end up in a different tax bracket. Yep!! .99 sounds cheap:-))

It's plain and simple marketing. The marketing powers that be have determined through many studies that an item listed at let's say $ 99.99 is perceived by the shopper to be cheaper than an item listed at a flat $ 100.

That's the only reason. Items are not required by law to be priced that way.

onceisenoughilearnedmylesson
09 looks better than 10
19 looks better than 20
29 looks better than 30
99 looks better than another dollar added to the price

Zodiac
it is an idiotic trick stores use to make the price seem one dollar less, pathetic
