terish | Why does the stock market take a dive everytime the fed raises the interest rate? |
They already have a good idea of what is going to happen long before it actually does. So, do they think they may get lucky or what? |

On the springboard of life, can't we invest our thoughts on a higher plane without the same stock answers. Can we not form a stronger bond without taking the plunge? I t doesn't take much to make the stock market nervous (notice how we refer to it as an organic entity?). I can remember analysts informing us that good news (better than forcasted) spooked the market. I can't recall the details, but the upshot was that the news, while being optimistic, could lead to inflation or deflation or recession, or who knows. Trying to read the tea leaves of the stock market will drive us all crazy. Invest in companies, not stocks. Companies that have high growth yields. Anything else is like playing with Tarot cards. |

Many businesses borrow money to run their operation. When interest rates go up, it costs more money for them to borrow money. This cuts into their profits.
And if companies make less profits, their stocks are worth less. |

It doesn't always. In fact sometimes it does the opposite. Anytime news is announced and the market goes up or down that change reflects the difference between what the market thought would happen and what actually happened. That's true of interest rates, consumer confidence levels, price indexes, elections, etc.
Say the market thought rates were going to be increased by 1/2% and fell somewhat as the rate announcement approaches but the rate is actually increased by 1/4%. The market might bounce back up in response.
In general higher interest rates are a drag on businesses and tend to encourage less spending by consumers. But higher interest rates also keep inflation in check and inflation can be bad for certain businesses as well.
Just as important as the Fed's rate changes is the verbage that accompanies the announcement as that tends to suggest what will happen next time as well. |

The simplistic answer is that as rates rise, dividend stocks acquire more apprehended risk. If you are guaranteed 4.5% by interest on a bond, why would you keep a 3% dividend on a growth or value company if the Fed is trying to slow the economy due to inflation fears. |

It sucks more of the labor capacity out of the nation with the additional profit going to the FEDERAL RESERVE shareholders thus slowing down the economy from the inflation the public caused by purchasing real estate with promissory notes and the Federal Government hidden taxation of the people by inflating money supply to pay for the war. The worse inflation will come years after the war more than likely as government does all in its power to hide the lowering standard of living of Americans forcing more into poverty. |

This Country (read: Business) works a whole lot better when the "cost" of capital is low. Every time you raise interest rates, it makes it more expensive to run a business, and thus lower profits to the Companies whose stock is traded on the Markets. |

They know what's going on bud, they aren't trying to play the lottery with the United States economy.
Mainly the war is the reason for increasing the federal Prime rate. When there is a war, the US is kinda on a huge spending spree so increasing the rate is going to decrease domestic purchases.
Don't worry, prime rate is going to go back down after we pull some of the troops back home in the next couple years to come. Just be on the lookout for the .5% increase coming up. |
