Why don't retailers like Safeway and Wal-mart make their own products to save money?
In general why don't companies manufacture more of their own stuff and buyout other industries to lower expenses? Someone told me Safeway and other companies have tried this but that it doesn't work is that true? Why doesn't this seem to work very well in business?

Some companies do that to some extent. Braums has their own dairy and manufactures their own products and sells them in their stores. They're very vertically integrated, but they sell a relatively narrow line of products too Sometimes its cheaper for companies to buy products from other companies, to outsouce (OMG) and use their own capital to build new stores and expand distribution.

Me
They are doing this with certain things. Where have you been?

Safeway and Wal-Mart DO NOT manufacture their own goods. These are production companies with spare capacity to produce more goods, meaning they have covered all their fixed costs and still have the ability to produce more products. Therefore Safeway or Wal-Mart make a deal with these companies to product their brand products at a low cost since they only need to cover variable costs.

Ted
They are not manufacturing companies. Business works better when companies specialize. Therefore, your original assumption is wrong. Making their own stuff won't save money. It is much cheaper to buy peanut butter from a peanut butter manufacturer and slap a Safeway house brand label on it than to build your own peanut butter factory.

There is nothing cheap about manufacturing your own products.
Think about what it would take to make the product from plant, buying raw material, employees, etc. etc.

Much cheaper to buy from somebody else. Especially when you are a big retailer that needs to be able to change their merchandise constantly to attract more buyers.

They have too many different products. They are retailers not manufactures. Two different businesses. If they did it your way not only would they have to run the retail business but now they have to buy more space to manufacture all these different products ( way to many for a retail store like WalMart or Safeway to do), hire more people, buy more equipment and on and on and on. So why not just buy from a manufacture and mark up the price and sell it.
