I wouldn't use the word "tremendously". It's not like you're suddenly paying $10 for a loaf of bread overnight.
2 main things:
- Demand - for things like rice/wheat in Asian countries, bad weather etc
INFLATION the big obvious answer |

The price of gasoline, and the low dollar which drives up commodity prices. Also shortages of some commodities. And speculation about what ethanol is going to do to commodity supplies, like wheat and cattle, and food prices. Corn is the gold standard among feeds for livestock. As corn is diverted for fuel it affects the cattle markets and corn may supplant wheat for planting. |

As the price of gas goes up, everything else goes up with it. If you think about it mostly everything is revolved around transportation, because you need transportation to transport the goods, such as food. |

This crazy ethanol program is coming home to roost. Anybody who knows anything about energy knows this was/is a stupid idea. Nearly as much energy is used to plant, fertilize, water, harvest, process and ship the corn into ethanol as it produces. The net gain is minimal. This is all about pork and buying votes and getting contributions. And we have this great side effect of rising food prices. |

A number of reasons - one being the cost of gas (food is shipped by trudk) ~ Another could be the weather the midwest has had this year. I'm sure a lot of crops were ruined by floods, etc. ~ |

This has been gone over a few times but, I will put my two cents worth down for you.
There are several reasons for this.
1 - There is a rice shortage that is expected to get worse because of the cyclone in Burma. There simply has been a few big disasters and crop failures. So food involving rice may be going up. In fact there have been riots in some countries over rice.
2 - There is a little thing call Ethanol being produced from corn. This is making the price of corn go up.
3 - Because corn is expensive to buy this will affect the Nations meat prices because many animals are fed corn, which used to be cheap and now isn't.
4 - Because Corn prices are high...many farmers are feeling it is a good idea to no longer produce wheat (and who can blame them) in favor of producing corn. For the first time in our Nations History we are having to import Wheat which is making the price of wheat go up. It is also making anything that uses Wheat to be more expensive.
5 - The price of Gas is high and this translates to...everything gotten to market with gas will go up to reflect the higher gas prices.
This is what I have gathered by listening to news reports and looking at the prices of Gas (no one can get away from that one) |
