Why is Yahoo stock only $28/share while Google's is $617?
How can the #1 seen site in the world have such a low price for their stocks?

Just because they are the number one site does not mean they can make money off of that. Google's profits are enormous (much greater than Yahoo's) and they keep on coming out with new stuff. The effective use of their simple text ads has gained them the largest online ad market share. The high price reflects that google will grow extremely fast in the future. the low price for Yahoo seems to say that the company will be stale.

When you compare two companies, you shouldnt compare them based on share price. You should compare them by overall value (aka Market Cap). For instance, Company A and Company B could both be worth $100, but Company A decides to ONLY issue 2 shares, while Company B issues 100 shares.

Thus, Company A's share price would be $50/share ($100/2 shares)

and Company B's share price would be $1/share ($100/100 shares)

but both companies are worht the same...

Ok but on to your question. Even if you look at them on a total Market Capitalization basis, Google is MUCH higher. And it all comes down to its ability to make money.

Think about it, how does yahoo make money off you? Advertising. BUT, they only make money off the ads you click on Yahoo sites.

Google does the same thing, BUT with adwords, Google also makes money off you when you click on a google ad on a non-affiliate google site (ie a random weblog). So they make a ton more.

Plus, google has had much better growthin traffic over the years while yahoo has actually been slowly losing traffic to google (gmail, overseas stuff, etc.).

First thing, Google is a powerhouse. And Yahoo probably has a lot of outstanding shares, so if you multply 28 with the millions of outstanding shares they have, their company is worth a lot. Also the stock may have splitted because it was priced to high but im not sure

Yahoo has been public for many years, Google only for a few. It has also split many times. Yahoo has about 4 times the volume of stocks that Google has. There is much more to the value of a stock than just the price its trading for.

something about a return versus price. i learned about it in this book i read once, but forget the details. but if you do the math, you realize that Google is actually cheaper than yahoo. Economics. Gotta love it baby....

Because Google makes more money than Yahoo!

Yahoo! only made $751,391,000.00 USD in 2006
Google made $3,077,446,000.00 USD in 2006
