Because in this state of economy people are panicking. Lots of companies are not doing well, letting their employees go and finally getting bankrupt, so buying their stock would be simply waist of money. Even bigger corporations are not doing very well. Lots of people bought houses at a high price, when in reality they were not able to afford those houses, but banks lended them money anyways. Those mortgages (millions of them) are what created major problem today. Banks are not able to collect money (mortgage pmnts) from people, and houses go into foreclosures. Thus, now banks have to sell those foreclosed houses, but the rest of us don't have sufficient money to buy all those houses, because now banks are too afraid to lend any kind of money to anyone. And if you get fired, you are screwed completely. :) I hope that helped. |

It dropping because the supply of money is drying up. Businesses are laying of workers and people are buying less. The price off stocks reflects what people believe companies will earn and it doesn't look good. Retirement accounts are going down fast. |

the american banks are in trouble - they are going broke. this is because they give mortgages out to people who cant pay them back in the hope of alot of interest in the future. some australian banks were invested in them, because although they are high risk, they bring back major profit. now that wall street has gone broke every one is trying to sell shares, and that means that the price drops. for us in australia, (if you are in australia) it means that prices for shares will drop, and the banks that invested in them may be in some trouble. |

Because people are dropping out. It's better to buy low and sell high in the market. So people are trying to sell them to make profit but people are scared to buy because they have been dropping. Watch MSNBC more. |
