Wondering Soul
Why is it that etrade shares cost so much less than they did 8 years ago?
I intend to purchase 10,000 USD worth of E-trade shares (perhaps more). I would just like to know exactly why it is that E-trade shares have dropped so far on the charts since 2000. Is there a reason for this, and why? Do you believe that the shares will rise to what they were 8 years ago in the next 7-9 years? Is it even wise to purchase 10,000 USD worth of E-trade by the start of the 4Q 2009?
Additional Details
I understand that the bad economy has something to due with it, but why has etrade been so affected by the crisis? And is it reasonable to say that a company in it's possition might rise to the previous 59 dollars a share (in 2000) in the next 7-9 years?

I think Gary described the current problem right. With the repeal of Glass-Steagal brokerages, insurance companies, and investment institutions were allowed to take deposits and act like banks.

So E-trade is being hit with the same problems as all the other investment banks.

But one thing he left out was nine years ago we were in the Internet Bubble where all Internet stocks were prices many times over their worth.

So comparing the price to the price at the height of a bubble is a distortion, a bad comparison.

Basing your purchase decision solely on price is speculating, not investing.

How are their earnings?

What is most important about a company in the longer term is how much money that company is making for you or will make, not just price movements in the shorter term.

E-Trade Bank got E-Trade in trouble. Their bank got involved in the subprime loan and got bit. In a way, they were the first to get in trouble and was pretty much the pre-cursor of where we are today. E-Trade got a bailout from a private investor (I think someone from the Arab nation).

Currently E-Trade is now a brokerage and just a bank that offers a savings account. They aren't involved in the mortgage industry, just focusing on their brokerage unit.

I don't see E-Trade getting back to it's highs, I see them getting bought out by another firm. If you spend $10,000 all on E-Trade would be a foolish mistake. If you are interested in E-trade stock, I would buy a $1,000 and use the rest to purchase other stocks. Don't bet the entire farm on E-Trade, that's a bad idea.

Surenuff
E-Trade stock has underperformed the rest of it's competitors because it was particularly exposed to the housing/mortgage finance industry. Several years ago they made a move into online banking in addition to their already existing online trading business. That made them a bunch of profit during the housing bubble, but has since cost them very substantial loan write downs.

right now i would not invest in that company. Out of all of the discount brokerages, that one is the most likely to go belly up. Do some research about the financial situation about ANY company instead of blindly investing in it.

Economy and Competition.

Have you not read a newspaper or turned on the TV for the past year? We're in one of the deepest recessions since the Great Depression. Almost all stocks have been dropping since investor confidence has plummeted.

drtried
E*Trade had a great stake in the mortgage industry, as stated above.

Their shares were falling before the market because they started facing more competition in their market, they were still charging $10 per trade while other brokers were charging .99 cents so they just lost their niche. The market as a whole has been reeling so there will be a lot of bargains that are a lot better than e-trade.
