Why is it that republican presidencies are linked with recessions and poorer stock performance?
I thought conservatives were pro-bidness. All I see is major spending and consistent mismanagement.

You've noticed? Most Republicans I know are trying to blame the current recession and housing crisis on Bill Clinton.

Basically, Republicans want smaller government and less restrictions on business and Democrats want bigger government and more government restrictions. Obviously giving businesses (like mortgage companies) free reign to do whatever they want doesn't always work.

Although I hate to generalize, there is a difference between Republicans looking for a payoff now, even if it costs more later, whereas Democrats look for long-term stability.

Even now...we are shooting ourselves in the foot with the stimulus checks, cash injections and constant rate cuts, but if it causes the stock market to pick up for a day or two, it was all worth it right? Even if we have to pay it all back over the next 25 years?

You manage for long term stability for just times like these, so that when there is a downturn, you have a Plan B in place and landing is softer. This administration for the last 7 years just tried to live the dream that it was doing a wonderful job and really paid no attention to what was going on or what the future effects would be.

Oh, if you are upset about the "Reaganomics worked" comment...it's sarcasm! In my studies, one project I took on was to research what the final effects of Reaganomics were, and after reading tons of articles, looking at economic indices...there is a total hung jury. Some can say it worked because the economy recovered after it was implemented, others can make a case that the economy recovered despite it. Too many interdependent factors, some influenced by the policy, some not, and so there's a lot of guesswork and no clear way to separate all causes and effects for a clear case.

Because they spend like rich people - recklessly and with not a thought in their head for the consequences. And because they give freely of TAX DOLLARS to Big Business in the form of Corporate Welfare. And because they provide deep tax cuts to their rich DONORS and friends to pay them back for getting them elected in the first place. And because they are continually and steadily INCREASING THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT AND CREATING NEW DEPARTMENTS.

People in this country would $hit if they knew the dollar amount that Homeland Security is pissing away.

And to the dude who had the balls to post that "Reaganomics worked" pal- all I can say to you is that your sentence is in direct conflict with every major reputable Economist on the Planet.

But you just have another sip of that nice Kook-Aid, now, ya hear?

Hoover did a great deal to promote that perception. For some reason which I have not been able to understand, Jimmy Carter has gotten off pretty much scott free from the linkage although during his administration stock performance was nothing to brag about and his was the era of stagflation. Maybe it is because Democratic presidents are not supposed to be pro-stock market. One of the worse stock performances of all time occured during the Nixon administration, the dreaded crash of 73-74, also I might add a Republican administration.

You are correct that bull markets are associated with democrates. I believe this is because the dems increase the capital gains (short/long term) rate and therefore fund managers and individuals must keep their stock positions longer. Republicans decrease capital gains and therefore encourage people to 'short' the market. When the short selling takes off people get nervous and take profits thus causing the market to spiral downward. This time is a particularly bad one, due to the banks big screw up. Their sloppy lending practices have caused a normal market blip to potentially send us back to the stone age, or at least pre-industrial revolution. Got any gold/silver, keep hold of it.

exactduke
You seem to have forgotten about the Carter administration (democrat) who presided over one of the worst recessions in the last 50 years. Double digit interest rates, unemployment and inflation.

While I don't want to alibi for the current administration, there have been other 'klutzy' administrations out there (including democratic).
