Morey000 | Why is the dollar getting stronger against the Euro? |
Given the huge budget deficit, trade deficit and national debt America has, and in light of the credit market collapse, shouldn't it be going the other way? Additional Details Dave - please see chart

That is why the euro was stronger then the USD, but now that Euro is falling and there market is worse then the out come of our market, there for the euro is and everything else is losing value and coming back equal with the USD, he Johnny C. has a point! Euro is weaking and the USD just doing nothing so it gains no matter what! |

As the majority of America's banks and businesses go down under, people look for other places to keep their fortune. One way they do this is by keeping their fortunes in a stable currency, the most popular is the US Dollar.
The increase in the Dollar against the Euro is a sign that the American economy is not doing so well and people would rather invest in its currency than in its businesses. |

Not really, currency value is to do with demand, the USD$ has been so cheap, and with the up coming elections in the US, maybe investors world wide are optimistic for the future in the US, meaning the currency is being bought again, and hence the value has risen.
Be interesting to see what happens at the G20 summit!! |

It's not the case tht the dollar is getting stronger, it's that the pound has been weakening faster.
The US has been in recession for longer, it's been in economic downturn for a few years. However, the US doesn't have a public deficit like the UK, in fact the govt there has been in surplus fora while, they have more money coming in from taxes than they spend. The way that countries work their way out of recession is by spending; last year they gave a tax refund (taken from the surplus) to encourage people to spend and kick-start the economy. So it's in a strong position.
The UK is just going into recession, and we don't have a surplus, in fact we have one of the largest deficits. So we can't spend our way out of recession, what we need to do is lower interest rates so it's cheaper and easier for companies to borrow and invest.
That means anyone investing in sterling will get a lower rate of interest, so it's not attractive, hence the exchange rate worsens against currencies such as the dollar where they don't need to lower interest rates.
Having a huge deficit isn't necessarily a problem, Japan has been in that position for many years now and is still one of the strongest economies in the world. However at some stage that needs paying back, it's delaying bad times in the hope that growth will help them repay the deficit but that's a risk, their economy could collapse completely in years ahead.. |
