w s | Why is the dollar getting stronger as the recession deepens? |
doesn't make any sense to me, can anybody explain? |

A Flight to Safety/Quality. Investors consider dollar denominated investments to be a safe haven in bad times. I have a degree in business, (including a few hours in the Dismal Science) but I dont think it serves a purpose to reinvent the wheel, or give an ambiguous answer and claim some credentials to justify an answer.
Put four economists in a room and you end of with five answers. |

despite Dain B's swollen head he is correct, the dollar is valued in relation to other currencies, who's countries are also in recession. |

In addition to the above answers. Deflation. As the recession deepens the prices go down (in some cases, food for example went up record levels this year but is expected to go down) and the value of the dollar means more. Other than that the above answers are very solid. A dollar used in the U.K. for instance goes a lot farther than it did a year ago because their currency, the Pound, went down farther than the dollar. |

There is the flight to safety issue but many also suspect that there is a carry trade issue.
Carry trade means that investors are using a currency to purchase foreign securities. Over the past years both Japan and the US had low interest rates and investors borrowed dollars or yen to invest in foreign securities. Now that securities around the world have collapsed in value, fund redemptions are being made causing those currencies to be be purchased and foreign currencies to be sold.
If the markets drop further in the next couple of months, expect the dollar and yen to get even stronger as hedge fund redemptions increase. |

The Dollar has been getting stronger against the Euro and British pound over the last year as the financial crisis has deepened. As others have stated - no matter how bad the US financial situation is, people still view the $ as a safe haven.
But the Yen is now also seen as a safe haven and has actually strengthened against the dollar over the past year.
31 Dec. 2007, 1 USD = 111 Yen
15 Jan 2009, 1 USD = 90 Yen

Well there are lots of things going on.... but the short answer is...
The economies in other countries are also doing bad. So their currency devalues with respect to our currency. |

Yes much of what has been said is true, in terms of the USA being a haven during times of uncertainty. May I suggest something potentially controversial. The "Obama effect." A return to optimism and expectations of future success in the land of opportunity. If you know anyone who lives overseas just ask them how they feel. |
