You now how for the past couple of years people haven't been able to afford their mortgages and have moved out? Well, these mortgages get foreclosed and the company that owns this mortgage is now out a ton of money. And this happened all over the USA. So, we have millions and millions of dollars that are being defaulted on. So, the big mortgage and Insurance Co's are losing a ton and going under. Wall Street suffers.

Investors panicked and got rid of stock because of the problems with another big investment firm going bankrupt (another poster explained why the lending institutions and banks are in trouble). Then, AIG, a worldwide insurance co. announced it was in financial trouble, and the stock market went down some more. When the government announced it was going to bail out AIG because it would cause worldwide financial problems if they went bankrupt, the stock market started going up again.
The reasons investors pull money out of stocks or sell off certain stocks can be complicated but its based on the overall economy and how they think it will affect the companies they invested in. They want to sell before the stock goes down.

The market isn't crashing. It closed down about 20 points lower on Friday than it did on the preceeding Friday. The market never goes straight up, or straight down. We were on the longest time of econmomic prosperity from the Reagan years, and our economy fundamentals are still strong. Unemployment is lower now than when Bush took office, (but still going down) The price of oil has taken money out of peoples pockets, and so manufacturing is somewhat slowed. Fortunately the low US dollar has made our goods cheap around the world, and 54% of everything we make gets exported. The market has been in what they call a bear market. It retreats about 25% after it has made huge gains. We are close to reversing from the bear market into a rally.

In lay terms, people got greedy. Now they're in deep s%*t cause they can't pay back their debts. Its actually a natural part of the market. You need these major declines in order for the market to move higher. Think of a forest fire, you need to burn away the old brushes to have new growth. Natural cycle of life. People are just over-reacting. Why? Cause money is involved.

Republican Deregulation

They're all about letting big business go hog wild & do whatever they want,
while they put more & more restrictions on your freedom & mine.
They repealed laws that kept financial institutions from taking crazy risks.

A similar thing happened when Bush's daddy was president--Google "Silverado Savings and Loan", that was W's kid brother Neil's scandal that cost taxpayers $1,300,000,000 (Neil Bush was fined $50K).

Reagan, Busg and the Gingrich congress also undid Carter's energy conservation measures, killed R&D on alternative fuels and got us into expensive wars, trashing our economy.

When things go bad under a Republican president, they claim the president is powerless to do anything about it. Yeah, Right! So why do they want the job? They blame Carter for the wrecked economy he inherited from Nixon/Ford. They blame Clinton for the sun setting at night. They NEVER take responsibilities for their disasters.

Exxon/Mobile continue to post record profits. Bush/Chenney are happy.

Barack Obama has been closely monitoring this situation for years, and introduced comprehensive legislation over a year ago to fight mortgage fraud and protect consumers against abusive lending practices. Obama’s STOP FRAUD Act provides the first federal definition of mortgage fraud, increases funding for federal and state law enforcement programs, creates new criminal penalties for mortgage professionals found guilty of fraud, and requires industry insiders to report suspicious activity.

Because of our Shitty president George W. Bush

I guess it's because no country wants to borrow money to the U.S. who is known to be a big spender. So that means that american banks dont have as much cash flow as they used to. therefore the interest rate has to go up, so people who bought their home at a variable interest rate are no longer able to afford their house payment. So they have to use theur credit card. but like I said, no country want to invest in america anymore so theres no money

zelgadus
becase bush started the war and he had to use alot of the USA's money

Tuggy
It was driving drunk.

many americans were irresponsible and took money they could not repay..

and we blew too much money on war that was of no practical benifet
(IE the people who did 9/11 are alive and chillin)

the way i see it is the gas prices are to blame.
companies need money to ship their goods, so they raise prices
people already cut back money for gas so they spend less money and maybe cannot afford what they could before now that prices were raised
also ITS NOT THE PRESIDENT YOU MORONS do any of you realize what powers he has and doesn't have. people cancel mortgages because...they bought something they cant afford just as with the great depression
