bascically because each day brings with it a series of new economic activity that sways investor ideas about whether is is good or bad to be holding stocks.
Say interest rates just went up..well the stock market is likely to go down because people can invest in guaranteed investments with higher returns with less risk than stocks..so they start to sell their stock..
That's just one example of literally thousands of factors that affect how a market will act in any given day. |

it is called trading -- people buying and selling stock that causes the market to rise and fall. if oil futures go up and people start pumping money in to oil related stocks the market will go up, if wal mark gets get lawsuit and folks start to dump their wal mark stock the market will go down, simple lesson |

The simple answer is that the price is set by supply and demand. In order to have a trade, there must be a buyer and a seller. Everyday, a different set of buyers and sellers interact. It is basically random as to who will decide to buy and sell on any given day. |
