Why people are so afraid to invest in the stock market?
I understood that no matter how much the price of a stock drops you always keep the number of stocks you bought, so why people worry so much?

I mean, if I don´t need the money I invested right away, why I should be so worried about the crisis... if I expect the price to increase later on...

Would you play poker, using real money, with some of those
poker pros that you see on tv? Well, right now, the wall street "pros" are raping the stock market.

What I don't get is that the stock market drops because people sell, and then people get upset that the market drops, and think the world is going to end...

...then don't sell your stocks, and the market stays up!!

You want to fix the market... then buy stocks!!

Jesus Christ, people are dumb.

I don't understand economics. It's stupid.

Noones afraid they are waiting for a thing called a fallout bottom ....basic bottom where we can build from....at sometime the confidence will grow due to some small thing and our stock will be at like a decade low and then they will trade like wild fire and our stock will grow for now everyones just waiting but losing its like a false bull market....and even though the news talks about people selling ...itsnot people its the major holders which soon they should stop unless they wish to bankrupt the entire world

because it's such an unstable thing to do..

What happens if the company goes under? During the dot.com bust many companies did. Stock was then worthless. Some people lost everything.

And what if the market dumps and doesn't recover for several years? That may be OK for someone in their 30's but for someone that wanted to retire in the next 5 or 10 years, that will ruin those plans.

And, think about how long it could take to get back to where you were. Consider: If a $1,500 investment lost $500, or 33 percent, it would be at $1,000; then it would have to gain $500, or 50 percent, to break even.

The worst is people in retirement. If they are depending on money from their investments to live on and they have it all in the market, they are forced to 'sell low'. How long do you think they can keep doing that? They are eating up their principle, not using gains.

Many people will be very badly hurt by this crisis.

You are correct. If you buy and hold for a long time, it doesn't matter if the stock goes up or down for 24 hours. But people are afraid that they might have to sell when the stock price is low; and they would lose money..

Because it might not increase until decades later...

For example, if you start investing now and lose $10,000, you won't see that money back for a very long time. You also might never see that money back ever again if the stock market doesn't come back up this lifetime, which is very possible.

Didn't read the previous answers but I am probably reiterating what has already been said but.. Stocks don't have to come back to where you first purchased them. There is nothing written or unwritten that says the buyer of a certain security must eventually be made whole. Never look at where you purchased a stock to determine whether to hold on to it or not, look at WHERE IT IS GOING.

When I first started out I purchased E*Trade (E Trainwreck) at $17.xx and held all the way down with an investment philosophy eerily similar to yours, I lost a few grand and quickly gained the ability to cut my losses without heisitation.

Don't rationalize yourself into a false sense of security that you MUST get back to even eventually.
