Why share price dropping when company announce profit?
I'm just wondering expecially lately when some company announce record surge on profit but yet the share price drop sharply? Why is that so? I'm from singapore.

Stock market pricing are about the future, not the past, it is what is going to happen in the future that affects the share prices, what is in the past usually won't matter. If you announce profit, it usually won't affect much as this is your performance in the past, if the ceo or chairman announced that the future outlook is rosy and expected to perform even better which bigger contracts on hand, this will cause the price to rise. On the other hand, if they expect profits to drop in the next quarter, then even if u have good profits now, it will still drop. Observe this for every listed company in the world, it applies, not just in Singapore, for I have been trading in the various markets in singapore, hong kong, thailand, japan, london and new york for the past 16 years, so i roughly knows how the market moves.

I have two ideas: First, the country's economy can play into it. For example, the U.S. is widely believed to be entering a recession, so consumer spending is expected to drop, even if the company was more profitable in recent quarters. Second, if traders believe that the company has hit its peak, they may choose to sell, thereby hoping to avoid owning an overvalued commodity.

Its about market expectation. Or possibly outlook for next year. Look to see what the analysts are predicting for profit and the compare with the actual profits announced. Also the CEO statement as to the outlook, order book, trsding conditions for next year. Remember the market is always looking forward-discounting the future.

There is a saying in the market, buy on the rumor, sell on the news. So investors buy in anticipation of good earnings, and sell when it happens.

Besides the company performance, the confidence factor on national and global economies are also key to the share prices. Lately due to the sub prime crisis, investors lose confidence and sell the market. I think it is going thru a period of consolidation and I gauge indexes will be heading up in the next quarter.
The beauty is if you have cash now, and buying into the blue-chip stocks is the best time. Hold it for the next peak, you will make a handsome bounty. A relevant link to help you on your way. http://www.101stockinvestments.com

Given the credit crunch in the US and the rest of the world, economies are getting pulled down along with it, the fallout so to speak. In your situation, the most likely reason is that the Company announced record profit but lowered guidance for 2008. Perhaps they cut revenue targets and or lowered the EPS figure. Perhaps their margins will be decreasing significantly due to increased costs of production. Maybe they may be predicting that they will sell less gizmos and gadgets because consumers will cut back on spending in a recession.

There are a hundreds of other situations, but this is the most likely in the current environment.

You have to take into consideration the current market volatility, regarding the US sub-prime crisis, the recent crashes of the US, UK and Chinese markets. As well as this, take over bids can hugely impact share prices, as it makes share-holders uneasy about new management

I think this is the usual trick for a company to do a mass sale on stocks that is about five times to even ten times overvalued as its neat asset. Many companies are doing the same old dirty tricks by issuing new shares, just like Hong Kong and China, 100 times as what it really worthed, then followed by a company profit report about as soon as one or two months after say, 10 millions shares has sold in the price of $5. They are shared by the top executives and company founders of say, 5 to ten million dollars each named as compensation. Based on the human nature of greed, they want to make and share more from the investors using the earning record of 20 million dollars in the first two months to attract more investment by dropping the price to $4.5/share. I think you should analysis the usual ambiguous financial/accounting statements in the monthly or annual report before you invest your money. Even blue chips sometimes make investors lost, how can you trust a company full of smart crooks? Those invested monies usually are shared by the inside top peoples as compensation, special share price offerred to those CEOs, eg, he or she has the privilege of purchasing the company's share at the price of $1/ share in the market price of $10/ share. Think about it, my friend. There are many insider-trading, rouge traders, and many trading scams. Hong Kong is known as the international capital of scams in real estate and stock market tradings!
