Why the #$(@$U)(#@ are gold shares dropping like crazy on the stock market?!?
With the stock market as it is, I invested in gold thinking it might weather the storm. I invested in RGLD when the price was $41. It has now dropped to $31.23. I invested in GLD when the price was $91. It is now at $79.29, having dropped over $4 today.

What's going on!? And is it a good idea to sell now and cut my losses, or hold onto everything for a bit and hope the price goes back up?

gold is ONLY a HEDGE against inflation ( JUST like CURRENCY is only a HEDGE against deflation).

if you dont understand that , then look up the word hedge. Its not meant to be usefull unless there is LOTS of inflation.

You DONT WANT that price of gold to go back up, its not just you making money ya know! Inflation will be the DOWNFALL of a nation. SOmething you dont want to look forward to,even for profit!

Better to own gold outright as a way to preserve and protect wealth during hard times than to have stock in it unless you are good with speculation. When the masses start to buy something out of fear, that's when you should have pulled out and colleted your profits. Again, it takes a seasoned speculator to do that.

Then again you never know when it could go back up. Its up to you to know whether or not to pull out, just know. I would suggest, when you have time, find a book on the basics of finance and economics. Maybe Econometrics would help you as well.

If you're gonna speculate in gold securities (one of the most volatile things around), don't whine.

A lot of people who bought gold earlier this year while anticipating disaster feel that the economy is now at or near the bottom and it's time to take their profits.

I'm sorry to have to tell you that you're a contrary indicator. A sure sign of a top in gold prices is when people who have never bought gold before start buying.

Whenever the little guy is flocking to something, its time to sell. When the little guy was flocking to buy tech stocks in the late 90s, the big guys were selling and then the bubble popped leaving the little guy with nothing. When the housing bubble was happening and the little guy was hearing stories of people getting 100-200k in appreciation in 1 year...he rushed to buy a house and then the bubble popped leaving him with a 200,000 dollar house and a 400,000 dollar mortgage. Gold/silver is the new bubble. The price got to 800-1000 and you all flocked to it. Now its going back to 400 like it always has. Never do what everyone else is doing to make money. Take another example. Visa....I was thinking about buying it, but when i saw that everyone and their mother was going to buy it, i knew it wouldnt be as good as everyone thought. Look at the price today. Selling for less than its first day on the stock exchange. Same with SIRI Too many little guys in that stock. You gotta buy the stock that nobodys talking about. For instance...buy KO today and you should make a 50% return in a few months.

There are a number of ways to invest in gold, stocks aren't the only one.

The thing is just because they're gold companies, doesn't mean they're going to perform better than any other kinds of companies. You still have to do incredible due diligence before buying any stock

gold is good for a inflation hedge, if the dollar gets stronger the gold index will drop because fears of inflation will subside, gold will drop when the dollar gets strong and people move there money in equities, also when inflation indexes drop so will the price of gold, good luck my friend and watch those inflation, gold and dollar indexes to time the market
