for the right mining company, buying their stock is a way to play the rise in gold, silver, etc.

when the cost per ounce from extraction to finished product, which does not usually vary, is much lower than the market price per ounce, the difference between the two is pure profit.

Because for a long recent time, Saudis, Chinese and Europe has feared our dollar collapse. So gold, silver and related stocks are in greater demand.

Dropping interest rates is inflationary. Thus it will take more dollars to buy the same amount of gold or other precious metals. Traders may sell their gold stocks if
1) get large profits in a short period of time
2) wait for the gold stock price to start making new recent lows.
3) wait for the gold stock price start a down trend.
4) wait for the gold stock price to penetrate below the uptrend line.

as a whole they are not really but it is getting more media attention lately. historically many individuals do trade in precious metal mining stocks as a way to trade the commodity by proxy largely because for the average investor the stocks are more readily accessible and the trading range is far less volatile. couple that with the problem of physical delivery if you trade spot month commodities (having to take physically delivery on the underlying commodity upon expiration of the current month contract) such as hundreds or thousands of pounds of a precious metal or thousands of gallons of oil if one trades petroleum contracts. as for why non end-user non-market making lay people trade precious metals is it is often felt that the metal is a solid hedge against inflation and/or currency instability.
