There are often trades labeled as "Out of Sequence" or "OOS" by the exchanges. It takes time to filter those trades back into the pile, so the last reported trade of the day may have taken place 10 minutes earlier and therefore not be the last. Or, a trade can be executed before the close, but not be reported to the exchange in time. The update is made after the close. |
|

what?
|
this isn't uncommon. final settlement can take a while if there's a lot of volume at the close. the market makers want to try extra hard at the end of the day to clear as much of the limit order book as possible.
typically, you'll see prices go up in the last few minutes. that's because it will make the market maker's inventory look a bit more expensive, plus they collect the commission for clearing the limit orders. this is why retail investors really have no business trading after ~3:30. |

The first number was likely a lagging indicator and not the actual closing price. |

spend some money, and get real time quotes. |

Most quotes are delayed 20-40 minutes. This is because the markets charge for real time data access. So, the price will continue to change until the delay time is met, usually 4:20pm for most US markets. Market indexes are normally real time as these fit in the news category. For some reason, the quotes of companies do not fit the news loophole. Using a broker site usually gets you real time price information. |

If you look at the day chart, the price jumped up .64 in the last couple minutes before 4PM.
There were a lot of last minute buyers. |

Time delay is one reason. But don't forget about after hours trading, either. Do a search for this if you need more info. |
