Will BP Survive This Crisis?
Who thinks it would be wise to buy stock in BP right now? Will the stock prices continue to fall, or is this the lowest they will get. Face it, if BP survives, their stock will rebound & if so, is now the best time to buy? 5 points

I would stay clear of BP right now. They are going to be billed for every cost related to this oil spill. I tend to think they could end up in bankruptcy because this leak is going to keep pumping oil into the Gulf until the relief wells are used in August. I saw a satellite photo of the Gulf today and it looks black. So, I wouldn't go near BP until there is some clarity as to how their finances will end up. Right now the tab is being run up.

Karmageddon
The stock price is screaming NO.

While it's true, that Union Carbide stock came back after they blew up half of India, it took many many years for it to do so.

As long as that oil is gushing out into our fragile eco system and as long as many, many people keep asking if it's a buy it will keep heading lower.

T. Boone Pickens said the only chance to stop this thing is the relief wells, if they work, and that doesn't take into effect what a hurricane could do this season, during the work on the relief wells. Some scientists are even likening this to a volcano saying that the relief wells won't work and it will just keep on spewing until it all runs out.

I think it's much worse than they are telling the public, so as not to panic us just from looking at the undersea video alone. Also BP has had a few other troubles with rigs in the past, like the Thunder (Blunder) Horse platform http://www.investmentandbusinessnews.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/thunderhorse.jpg

I would sell BP and I would not buy shares, at this point I don't even think it's worthy of being classified as an investment - it's a gamble.

WDOUI
Buy when it is low. last week it fell 18% and rebounded later in the week. BP will survive if it has to screw us twice to do so

b2fnow
Sounds like you're an investor, not a trader. This is no investment.

Maybe if you're looking for the right time to buy, that would be about a week before they stop the leak, if you can figure that one out, some time in August?

Still, it would not be a long-term hold, mired in lawsuits for decades to come. This isn't just a spill. There were lives lost and a billion dollar rig, and potentially the biggest spill in history in the most populated area that it could have happened. A puny spill like the Exxon Valdez is a drop in the bucket compared to this.

I think its enormously risky to buy the stock. Their chances of survival slip a small amount as this event goes on, until they have the well capped. I think there is less risk in buying some of their secured bonds. They have pretty good yields. And if by chance BP doesnt survive you still have a claim on the company.

Stock Trading Warrior
I don't think it's wise at all!

The thing is still in a strong downtrend. Estimating in your mind that now might be a good time to buy is not the way to go! Wait for something... anything to provide you with an indication that the stock is bounding off a bottom and beginning to trend upward. You can learn how to do that and really improve your trading/investing ability.

Yes it is too integral to the British economy. It is its second largest company and pays about 9% of the countries pension. Also it has deep roots in the West's foreign policy from oil investments the world over.

I would avoid this stock it will be a long time for it to repair. This bill could be huge there is also no telling what sort of political moves it might make. This company will survive but there is a reason even institutional investors are avoiding it. There is too much risk with a slow climbing reward.

"Pre-spill, BP had net assets of $105 billion and annual cash flow of up to $40 billion per year, excluding dividends and capital expenditures."

Len
The market has already incorporated all available information into the stock price, including up-to-the-minute updates on the situation in the gulf and the financial risks related to their liability in it. That's what a stock price is in the first place--a reflection of the current position of the company based on all possible information known to the world.

In other words, there's no way to know if this is a good time to buy BP stock, any more than there's a way to know if this is a good time to buy stock in Boeing, Coca-Cola, or Ford. On the other hand, if we imagine a stock market in which the stock price didn't reflect current data, and instead lagged behind and was based on BP's position months ago... well then you'd want to sell every last share of BP. But if that's how the stock market worked, the whole market would be absolutely pointless and therefore cease to exist.

Any opinion about BP given on Yahoo Answers is utterly meaningless in terms of whether it's a good time to buy their stock. But more broadly, trying to pick out individual stocks is a fool's errand, unless you're just doing it for the fun factor. If your goal is to invest wisely, diversify and think long-term.
