Everything is possible. But not everything is equally likely to happen.

I think the probability of Dow going up to 11,000 by Christmas is much smaller than is the probability of Dow going down to 7,000. But the probability of Dow staying within the current trading range is also good.

Being 100% certain with your predictions is a fool's game. Because there is no logical reason to be that sure. Nobody knows the future.

don't hold your breath. we still don't really know how obama will stimulate this economy. gas prices are down though

The Dow Jones isn't the best approximation of the market anyway, it's only 30 companies, though they are important companies. Look at the S&P 500 for a more realistic looking trend. Plus, since the S&P is a smaller number, the swings look less scary, which is nice.

Clark Kent
Since we are in the worst recession since 1929, it is more likely to reach 7000 before christmas.

Anyone that tells you they can predict the market is more of a fool than I. The same companies that have the balance sheet and management to weather a terrible storm are the same companies that will outperform when the times get better. Only invest in stable, well managed companies. Don't invest all that you plan to invest in the same month. Take your time and be patient. I will bet the farm that over a 20 year period a diversified portfolio of strong American companies will outpace inflation, barring a society destroying disaster. Good luck executing your investing plans.

It's possible, but not probable. Most estimates put the recovery in 2010.

This is my personal opinion.I am not suggesting this.

I feel it wont reach 11000 mark.Next Fed cut is expected on Dec 16th Only.Eventhough , stocks rally after rate cut i dont think so it will reach that mark.Because currently there are lots of bad news especially coming from Dept of labor and company earnings report and cutting future profit forecast. As per from todays date to Dec 16th , I assume the average mark for dow jones index will be 9000( very best) .May be it even go below 7000 mark....Next thing, after 16th eventhough stocks rally, i bet it would not.Because you asked the question before christmas.Lets see bro.

Which of the following would make you think that is possible or probable?

1. Worldwide recession just starting.
2. US lost 1.2 million jobs so far this year and accelerating monthly. Unemployment currently at 6.5%.
3. Credit crisis. No one knows the health of the worlds financial systems.
4. Sub-prime mortgages still haven't been addressed.
5. $50-$70 trillion outstanding in credit default swaps due to wall street running wild (over 100x the amount at the turn of the century).
6. Detroit Big 3 in deep trouble and will likely be bailed out.
7. Most states currently have budget problems.
8. States, cities, and companies will need to raise money to fund pensions due to large loses in investments.
9. Need for at least $300 billion infrastructure stimulus package.
10. US national debt at over $10 trillion (2x 8 years ago) and growing rapidly. This years estimated deficit at over $1 trillion.
11. Baby boomers retiring will put a large stress on medicare and social security.
12. 2 wars to resolve.
