Will i be considered a Day trader if i Buy Thursday evening And sale Friday afternoon?
I'm going to open a Scottrade account with the minimum $500 and was just wondering. Thanks. How long do i have to wait to buy and then sell to NOT be considered a day trader?

I am always amazed at houw many people here are willing to post answers even though they are wrong.

A day trade is a buy and sell of the same shares in the same trading day. If you do that five times in five days (same or diff stocks), you will be considered a "pattern day trader". At that point your account will be restricted from new trades for 90 days unless you increase your account balance above $25,000.

With a $500 balance, you can do up to four day trades in any five day period and slide under the radar. If you are that active, just send me the $500 and save yourself some stress.

Also note that if you have 500 shares of A, buying and selling 500 more shares does not constitute a day trade. The first 500 you already held would be the ones considered to be sold.

Normal settlement on trades is 3 business days. If you make 4 or more day trades in 5 business days you will be considered a pattern day trader. You're account can then be restricted to less trading unless you have a minimum of $25k in your account. Just put up a few more bucks :).

what?

yes.

when you buy, the paperwork takes 3 days. so you have to buy on monday, hold until thursday to sell. you can still buy something else on thursday with the money, but then you have to wait till wednesday to sell it.

it's called the "free ride" restriction. you can't trade with unsettled funds. if you

Scottrade won't stop you from a "free ride" though they will tell you to stop. But yes, you would be considered a day trader in common speak.

NO!!! If you buy and sell one the same day, that is call a day trade. You are allow to do this. But if you buy and sell (4 times, same stock) in 5 business days, then that is call a pattern day trader and you will need to maintain a account balance of 25k.

Samson
You will not be a day trader, you will be someone who traded in a day. A day trader is someone who makes money doing this for a living. They are people who buy stocks one minute and when they go up just a bit, sell for a profit.

A "day trader" is a pretty general term... it's not like there's a set time limit you need to hold onto stock so that you can avoid the designation.
