You don't get it. It's not the welfare crowd. It's lenders who allowed borrowers (including the wealthy) to borrow much more than they could afford. Some of the wealthy aren't diligent about paying their bills and so their credit scores are low. So they went with alternative financing. The alternative financing is adjustable rates, where the interest goes up so far that they can no longer afford their housepayment. Don't blame the welfare people. Middle and upper income people have been caught in the same trap. The welfare crowd usually can't get any kind of mortgage, so they rent and don't own.

It's not the welfare crowd who created this mess. It's the lenders, who made these idiotic ARM loans with teaser rates, thereby making people think that they could buy houses that they really honestly couldn't afford.
