If you want to guarantee the principal, your choices will be pretty limited. You have to stick with traditional savings accounts, which are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The FDIC guarantees your deposits up to $100,000. Internet banks seem to have the highest interest rates for FDIC insured savings account. For example, with an INGdirect.com account, you can get a 4.4% interest rate.

Hello,
If I were you I would either invest in a qualified financial planner to handle where your money is invested for you, or use part or all of the money as downpayments for real estate, or invest in learning how to be an intelligent investor. If you learn how to invest, then you can invest in things that most people call risky because they don't know how to do it properly and limit the risk. For example, most people say stock options are risky, but if you know how to do certain options strategies like collars or spreads you can lower or eliminate the risk. By doing it properly, you know the maximum risk and profit before you make the investment, and you know what your odds are. But what some of the people said is true, bigger returns usually come with more risk and responsibility, or you just have to be more savvy.

If you want to protect capital, and you are in a high tax bracket, invest in Muni bonds in your geogrpahical area. They are generally exempt from federal, state and local taxes.

Otherwise, Online Savings account from banks like HSBC, Citi offer about 5% interest rates.
Banco popular gives 5.5% approx for CDs approx 1 year durations.

goto bankrate.com for up to date info on CD and savings rate.

There are very few investments that guarantee the principal. One is t-bills. Long term government bonds do not. The pricipal is consumed by inflation. Another is a CD. In my experience those are about it.

You want to have your cake and eat it to. Sorry with with high return comes risk.

If you are that risk averse, put it in a savings account, but make sure the bank is FDIC insured to cover that amount.

With 60K in hand there's a lot of place you can invest in. The key is, "Do not invest in one place". Where risk is concern, it is everywhere.
To get an investment house which promise the highest return, and yet guarantees the principal is in fact difficult. Anyway I tried this investment program run by a mutual fund company which promises a good 300% return after 450 days on principal. Started off with 1K 7 months ago and being paid on time, now accumulated investment is over 2.5K. I think you should have a look at it.

I will suggest you start a small business of your own. It is better putting money in the bank. Nothing bullet proof this day.
