With the market on fire for the past few years, should I sell out of all my index funds?
Or could this bull run continue for another few years?

No one knows what the market will do. The market has gone up since March 2003. That's over 4 years! Generally the market takes a breather after 4 years. The S&P 500 is just new record highs. Generally there is a pullback when the market begins to test new highs after several years. Would I pull all my money out? No. Would I take some of the top now? Yes!

The current "Bull Market" has lasted since 1933, so go ahead and sell: why would anyone in their right might want to continue earning 8-12% a year for doing nothing at all, when they could keep their money in a nice shoebox under the bed?

I know many people who pulled out early this spring and now look at them. On the sidelines with the bull passing right on by. NOBODY can time market. It may be wise to pull some off the table but it is best to invest in great companies or great mutual funds with proven track records and stick with them for the long term/......(AT LEAST 10-20 years)

I wish I knew. Indeed the market has been really good these last several years. Bull markets tend to run longer than people normally imagine. They tend to feed on themselves. As do bear markets also. How much longer this one will last is anyones guess. I believe that prudence should be exercised at all times and more prudence should be exercised especially after a 4 year bull market run. But in this particular case prudence would not necessarily mean selling all of ones index funds. Certainly moving a portion of your investments to say t-bills would not be imprudent. After all a cash reserve would come in mighty handy if the market decided to shed say 25% to 50% of its capitalization. It has happened many times in the past. It does appear that this bull market has a ways to run yet, but I sure do not know how far or how long and I could be very wrong on that assumption.

Sell half and hold on to the rest. Even the index rises above present levels it will fall below it at some time, for sure. It always falls again below an all-time high. Then you buy again.

depends on your age and tolerance for risk...take out perhaps 25% and put into long term bonds...here you can get around 6%
