krhoads2429 | With the stock markets all down. Would it actually be a good time to invest in Mutual Funds? |

The answer is different depending on your personal "investment profile."
If you are under 30, like me, and have enough cash and access to a decent amount of emergency reserves, it is a great time if you are willing to incur the risk (which I am). Therefore, I will be adding to my stock investments in mutual funds after seing them drop dramatically in just the last month.
However, if you are closre to like 55 or aproaching your planned retirement age in general, you may want to consider if you can wait out another 40% to recover in 30 years... because nobody knows for sure that it will not happen, stocks always carry a certain level of risk.
Also, you may find that you do not have as much appetite for risk as you would like to have or thought you have. You may be tempted to react to another drop by selling at an even lower price, so try to gauge your true tolerance for risk or better discipline yourself to swings (like by ignoring the markets and having someone taht will always remind you for your goals). Lastly, if you do not have access to an emrgency cash fund, you may want to start there first. And if you want to start a family and your spouse wants to get a house, then mutual funds may also have to wait until you have some extra savings for mortgage payments as another emergency fund. |

Hmm, and what do your mutual funds invest in? I know not all mutual funds invest in stocks, but it is a diversified way to do so. The good thing about diversification is that hope that some will rise enough to compensate for those that fall, or vice versa. With "the stock markets all down" how would your mutual funds be up? The fluctuation of value for mutual funds reflects the changes in the net asset value of the stocks, bonds, or whatever the mutual fund is holding.
Traditionally, if stocks are down, that is supposed to mean that the money fled to bonds. However, if the reason (and it is the major reason for the current panic) for stocks to fall is the freezing of credit (and it has frozen, or is very sticky) then the money didn't go to bonds, it went to federally insured bank accounts or investments abroad (which aren't doing much better than here).
An old line among stock tycoons of yesteryear, "If everyone is selling [and they are], then buy."
May I suggest that if you decide to pick up some bargains, go shopping among those that are still making a profit and have little debt. Something else to look at, when you look at a company's financials (you do look at the financials, right?), see if it is one of those current anomolies where the book value of the company is higher than the market value (that bogus but sometimes convient yardstick of multiplying the last price times the number of shares outstanding). That spells b-a-r-g-a-i-n. |

No. As Peter Lynch said, "never try to catch a falling knife." |

I think Monday and Tuesday are gonna be telling. I would just buy Index funds on the Dow and Nasdaq. Instead of betting on a particular group of stocks, bet on the markets as a whole. |

What do you think the Mutual Funds invest in, Peanut brittle ? The basis for most funds is partly stocks. With the market down it is a good time to invest in the strongest which have dipped the lowest. |

You could have asked this same question every other month all year long and you would get conflicting answers. History proves your point that stocks are way oversold, and you are right in either thinking mutual funds or individual stocks. History also proves that bear markets last between 4 to 16 months, seldom have bear markets been shorter or longer. We are at 12 months of this bear market, so time is close. Now the question, which mutual funds. Europacific and Asian stocks were hot 2005 thru 2007. That is because the US dollar was declining. Now it is strengthening, so money will start coming back into the US stock market. My suggestion, buy at least five mutual funds, concentrate on US companies, Growth, Value, or Growth and Value funds. Divide into small, medium and large cap funds. You will find American Funds do as good as any Fund Group. Hint: If we hit 9200 on the Dow, we have seen this years lows, if we break below 7800 on the Dow, we could go down to 7200. If we break the 7800, that is the time for you to buy. Good luck. |
