Simple answer: YES!!!! There have been few opportunities like this in the past that enable investors to buy companies at a discount and reap the rewards.

More complex answer: YES!!! However, you MUST DO YOUR HOMEWORK if you are to succeed in investing. Just choosing a random company will probably hurt you rather than help you. Here's what you should do:

Read the classic investing books (look at your local library, they probably have many investing books that few people use)

Once you know your stuff, look at companies SPECIFICALLY IN THE BANKING SECTOR (such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, etc.) This sector has been hurt the most by the recent sub-prime mortgage crisis, and this causes many companies with great fundamentals and "hidden assets" to be undervalued.

One more thing:

1. BE PATIENT!!!! Once you do your homework and invest in a company, you WILL have to wait (probably years) until the full reward can be reached. Don't believe me? Try investing for one day and see how much you can gain (I'd bet even the best investors would lose money if they traded stocks every day).

Buy low and sell high...Its all about making money.

I would say yes, but you'll have to be prepared to be patient. Although the market is waaaay down, it could potentially still go down further. Fortunately, because they're down so far they have nowhere to go but up eventually. So if you're prepared to potentially wait it out, you'll almost definitely make money if you buy now. Good luck!

Wait for a couple of months for the Bail Out Programs by all participating governments to start working. Make sure you review and study company's financial condition, market share, product leadership, market niches and earnings growth rates vs competitors. If you don't understand what I'm saying here, DON'T GET INTO STOCK MARKET.
