The state of the economy is a personal thing. If you are employed in a well paying job & everything is going great, you are in an economic boon. However if your good paying job has been outsourced to India then you are in a recession. As time goes on an you can't find a job paying what you earned at you previous job & you lose your house, your new car was repossed, than you are in a depression. It matters little what the nation is doing when you are in dire financial straits. |

I don't think you mean depression. Isn't recession the correct term and we are not in a recession. |

No we are not in a depression.
I'm 72 and I was born during the depression.
Do yourself a favor and read the history of the depression.
You don't have the foggiest idea of what a depression is. |

I would say no
I would say this is more like 'normal'
we cannot be in a period where growth is the norm. growth always stops! a depression is where things are out of control - and lets be honest they are not. You cannot even call this s recession.
I think that tough times like this (with us all having high standards of living) are to be expected. |

Depression
A severe and prolonged recession characterized by inefficient economic productivity, high unemployment, and falling price levels.
Notes:
In times of depression, consumer's confidence and investments decrease, causing the economy to shutdown. The classical example of this occurred in the 1930s the Great Depression affected the global economy.
Recession
A significant decline in activity spread across the economy, lasting longer than a few months. It is visible in industrial production, employment, real income, and wholesale-retail trade. The technical indicator of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country's GDP.
Basically we need to have two consecutive quarters of negative economic for the recession - then we can go into a depression |

Nope not yet. We are not even in a recession yet. We may be working our way towards one. |

According to history, things were way worse than this, but our generation is spoiled and just feels depressed. I know I do, too much going on at one time. I agree with Carl P. |

We aren't in depression. In fact, we have gone the longest period in US history without a recession.
BUT things look bad. Two foreign wars, sub-prime loans, forex trouble, and so on. Maybe a depression is on the horizon, or at least a recession.
The trhing to remember is that we (the US) are doing better than any other country in the world. |

OPEC is considering using Euro money as their main currency. Maybe they know something that we don't know?
Could be something worst. |

There are still a lot of worthless jobs but it's possible. It's the last thing the politicians will admit. You will know for sure when there is no food on the shelves in the stores. |
