X-mas present for my newborn niece (financially sound)?
I'm looking to get a X-mas present for my newborn neice. I don't want to waste money by getting her toys (I'm sure she will get plenty of those from the rest of my family). What gift can I get for her (around $100) that can benefit her finacially in the future?

I think a savings bond would be really good. My grandparents have been getting those for me since I was born, and I already have around $1500 and that's only after 12 years, so I have 6 years left til I'm 18. You could get her a $50 or $100 one, which is what I usually get. Hope this helps!

You could put it into a savings account or perhaps buy a bond.

I have a newborn nephew (7 weeks) and for Christmas I'm getting him a domain name -- HIS domain name. It is a new trend but its one I think will continue. I have one for my own name and use it on resumes.

If her name is Tracey Hadley but www.TraceyHadley.com for the next 10 years.

And if she becomes famous one day, the domain name will be worth a lot!

That is an excellent idea. I would get her a savings bond. My grandparents got them for me each year and I cashed them in when I was 18. Its really a wonderful gift!

A savings bond, my step mom has gotten them for my almost-two year old before.

Clothes she would grow out of eventually, so good question. Maybe frame a photo of you and her, so she will always have it for memories. Get a real posh frame or something and maybe buy her a toy. I still have toys I had when I was small, I know how sad.

Or maybe get a piece of furniture for her room. Like a chair - no designs as we grow out of these too. Maybe a pink chair, a large one, so when she is older, she can snuggle down in it.

Or save the money for her. When she is older, she will really appreciate it!

stocks or bonds, that will mature and she can have access to when she turns 18, it could make a decent amt. of money , or you can buy her a star in her name - (check out National Star Registry ) its a cool gift and not many people have a star named after them....

best of luck

Start her a college fund and make yearly contributions-even small amounts will help in the future believe me.

Open her a bank account. Your $100 in 20 years who might know be a MILLION? :)

Set up a 529 plan for her. This is a college savings account. Anyone can contribute so it can build at any point in time. Check with a financial advisor in your area to find out more. I'm not sure what the tax deductibility is and exactly what the rules are...

Buy some stock in a start-up... It could be the next Microsoft, IBM, Ect.. Invest money every year for year. By the time she's 18 she'll be set for college.

You might talk to there parents and see if they have a savings account open already. IF not a savings bond is probably a good idea. They really aren't considered to be great investments for regular folks cause most bank accounts pay better interest. But in this case it is a gift for a baby and it makes quite a bit of sense. I believe the government has a website for US savings bonds so you might look that up to get more information.
