Olivia | dividends and selling short ? |
When an investor sells a stock short, and say that the stock pays a dividend during that period, who is entitled to the dividend? The borrower of the stock or the orig. owner? |
|

bigdaddy
|
The dividend is actually added to the price when the short seller settles the trade or is forced to cover his margin call. So the brokerage will retain the dividend. |
|

 |
The original owner.
The stock is borrowed from the original owner to allow the short seller to sell what he does not own.
In the US some brokers will gross up the in lieu of payment as it may not qualify for the 15% capital gains rate. |

<<<When an investor sells a stock short, and say that the stock pays a dividend during that period, who is entitled to the dividend?>>>
Both the original owner of the stock and the new owner of the stock are entitled to the dividend.
Everyone who is short a stock when a dividend is paid is required to pay the dividend for the shares he is short.
The brokerage will automatically deduct the dividend amount from the account of the person who is short the stock, then use the money to pay one of the owners. The company issuing the dividend pays dividend for the other owner. |
