first things first, i don't know the first thing about the stock market.
ok my question is this. can a very rich person for example buy 100,000 shares of stock at $50 per share totaling $5,000,000 and just wait for that stock to get to 60 and then sell for a quick one million dollar profit? is there a max number of shares you can buy? even if you didn't wait for it to get to 60 and waited to get to 52 that's still a $200,000 profit right?
couldn't billionaires do this all the time? i know i am probably missing something...
oh and a bonus question! exxon made a net profit of 45 billion in 2008. how many people is that divided by? where does the net profit go? |

In the US if you own more than 5% of the outstanding shares of a company you have to file a form with the SEC.
Your question on Exxon Mobil, look up the number of outstanding shares and divide that into their profit.
For your information, Yahoo Finance does this for you, look at earnings per share, TTM, Trailing Twelve Months.
Companies do not distribute all of their earnings, some are retained for future investments. |

In regards to SELLING, there is a limit for shares that fall into Rule 144 Selling,
There is a limit only if you are an affiliate of the issuing company. In a three month period, you can sell only
* a maximum of one percent of the number issued and outstanding shares the issuing company has stated in its most recently published report - on the PinkSheets for non-reporting companies or in or in the SEC filing, or
* if the stock is traded on NASDAQ or an exchange, the average weekly trading volume for the full four week period preceding the date you file your Form 144 with the SEC, if it is higher than the one percent limitation.
The limit applies only to the stock you sell in reliance upon Rule 144, and does not include free trading stock you own or stock you sell under a registration statement, all of which could be sold simultaneously. |

question 1 YES...less any commissions.....
#2 limit exists up to the level of available common or preferred shares authorized by the board of directors.
#3 YES they do it all the time and make money IF it goes their way.....They are know as Market makers
Bonus that money is corporate profit much of it is liable to be kept as retainer earnings and reserves but a lot will go for future Research and Development.....OIf course some of tht money does go to the top directors and VP as bonuses based on contract or meeting targets for their group |
