£1500!! What should i do?
A company i used to work for has paid over £1500 into my old bank account.

I found out because they sent a letter to my old address. To begin with i thought they had made a mistake as the account number matched neither of my current card account numbers, but then i checked an old one and phoned the bank.

I phoned the company back and told them i would send them a cheque but then when i told my friends they said i was silly and should keep it as they probably wouldn't take me to court as it would cost them way more to do that than what they have, by error, paid into my account.

What sould i do? How does all this court stuff work? Has this happened to anyone and what was the outcome?
Additional Details
I know they can't take it back out of my account, also they haven't got my new address so there wont be any bayliffs!

Leave the money in the account earning you interest and wait for the company to chase you. It was their fault after all.
If they don't come after you for it then throw a party or go on holiday with the cash.

It's called "Karma" baby!!

Keep the money and enjoy the crap that happens in your life or be honest and give it back!!

The moral decision is yours, I know I'd give it back no matter how badly I'd wanted to book a nice two week holiday to the Caribbean for the winter, you know what I mean?!!

I have a friend who was paid for two months after leaving his job. He blew the lot and then dropped his a##e when they realised and came looking for it. His dad had to pay it back for him.
I'd keep the cash for a year or so in the account. If no one asks for it back keep it. But you've told them you have it and sombody'll have it on record now. So you'llhave to give it back.

fake_bullets
give it to the boy who is sick...I have seen advertisement on myspace.( keep some for me....lol )

Bruza 17/uk
they can take it back, it's happend to my dad before, he though there was nothing they could do, he was wrong.

Mr Jack Hackett
get a copy of your terms of employement (from your x employer) if you didnt sign to give them permisson to take money from your account then bollocks to them, take the cash and have a good one!

Stefy
Well if you have already informed them of their mistake you will have to return the money to them.

I know it is tempting to keep the money, but somewhere along the line you will feel awful that you kept it.

Court fees or solicitor fees alone would cost about that much so it really is not worth the hassle.

Also it is all well and good your friends telling you to keep it, they won't be the ones that will get in trouble in the end though will they.

As you have already contacted the company and obviously have a conscience hence why you have posted the question, I would at least try once more to give it back!! if no reply, set the money aside and wait, if you don't receive a reply again then perhaps keep some and donate some to a charity or needy cause, such as the one already suggested. Honesty will make you feel better in the long run.

stick in it savings.
and keep it for 6 months maybe even a yr.
if nothing has happened and they havent contacted you, then no worries!
if they do, you have the money to give back, you also have made some money off it!

to be honest is a good attribute that you have .Its apart of you don't change that
you will feel guilty and lousy about it
not to mention the company can give you no end of hassle.

a man in Swansea lived on the streets his name was tea cosy.(nick name)as he wore a hat that looked like one.
he found a wallet that had allot of money in it .he took it and handed it in .the person who dropped it got there money back .This was a man that had nothing no home no material things but what he did have was honesty .

be tees cosy and be honest
take care for now

they cant take it off you as it was there mistake !! if a bank accidently put money in your account you can tell them they aint getting it back as well it was there mistake you did ask it to be put there !!!

keep it and enjoy !!!!

GC
Give it straight back. You are in dangerous territory even considering keeping it. Your friends might be right, but many companies take a zero tolerance attitude, even if it does end up costing them more.

You say they don't know where you live, they will soon find you if they want to.

I would be honest, it will come back to haunt you one day if you don't.

in this case the bank have made mistake.
may be they can not take it from you the problem is that may be ajunior emplyee who will pay for that .
try to know indirectly from the bank if the bank paying that or some junior staff ?

bootycreord
You should give it to me. I,ll foward you my address!

meday
Take no notice of the person who said if they accidently put it in they can't take it back. They can take it back. It would be better for you to put it in a savings account for the moment and contact the company about it. You will at least earn some interest on it. They probably wouldn't send you to court, just get the bailiffs to come and take property of yours to the value of the money instead.

get it spent , ................ let them worry about getting it back

bigtimejk
Put it into a cash ISA and claim the interest. Leave the money untouched. If paid by mistake, the company can get the money back off you legally. If you don't pay the money back and you have to go to court you might find that it is you that has to pay the court costs if found at fault. Bailiff costs, if they find you, will probably be in excess of £500 and payable by you. A friend of mine was overpaid for a summer job whilst a student and ended up having to pay all the money back in the end. Keep the money in safe high interest and contact the business who paid you. If they are slow in claiming the money back, just keep taking the interest 'til they do.

do what u think is right if they have paid it in then its their own fault for doing it so rightfully its yours theyc ant o nothing about it. also have u already wriiten to the company and if u have and they want the money back i suggest you give it to then so any court matters dont arise

hope this helps x x
