DONT PANIC I WORK FOR HSBC

how come you only have a self serivce card???? that is odd? Have you asked for a new one may be a solo card??????

We do have a really good online saver account instant accsess or get a bank account plus (it does cost £6 a month for 12 months then £12 for 6 months but then you can get a saving account where you put £250 a month in for the 18 months and you get something like 10% intrest or phone up and they will give you a saving account on the phone!

I would recommend an instant access savings account,
They're exactly what you seem to be looking for and should help.

Thank you :)
Check the different banks for different rates,
You can sometimes get a better deal if you shop around.

You can put £3000 into a mini cash ISA which means you don't have to pay tax on the interest. You can draw out the money without any penalties, but it provides a good way of saving until you have found a car that you want, or even if you want to leave it there for a few years. The post office used to do good savings accounts but they all change so quickly you might have to shop around, or just put the remaining £2,000 into another account at hsbc. Enjoy your money!

Not being greedy or anything but best thing to do is utilize the money. Check what best interest you can get and open a savings account. Its always better to save for future rather than spending on unneccessary stuff. Ta

You might consider Zopa as part of your investment strategy. It's an online lending and borrowing exchange, which will match the investors (the lenders) to borrowers (with good credit ratings.) So you can use the money to give out loans, and you get to keep all the interest. This means you get paid higher rates of interest than the banks would give you.

If you apply via this link:

http://www.zopa.com/member/The%20Hulk

you'll find an attractive introductory offer where you receive £30 if you lend more than £500.

Unfortunately, if you've lent the money to someone, you don't have immediate access to it. But you do get repayments regularly, and you can opt to either relend, or have these repayments paid to your bank account.

Have a look at it. They give good rates of return - I'm getting about 7%-11%pa. You might find a place for it amongst your investments.

Yes I know that with my credit union and other banks you can have an ATM card and just withdraw from your savings account. Buying a car would be a great idea because you don't want to nickel and dime the money away then can't even see or remember where it went. Been there done that!

Your problem, f80, is that good interest rates and ready access do not easily go together. If you plan to buy a car soon, that part of the money should go into an instant access account. Your best bet may be if HSBC offer an interest-paying account linked to your current account (possibly an internet-access account?).
If you can tie up part of the money for a year or more, shop around building societies for the best rate on fixed-term bonds. Better still is a cash mini-ISA, if you have not already used your allowance for 2007-2008.
