A bank being rude what do you think of this?
An 85 year old lady who does not drive therefore has to rely totally on public transport, banks every Friday after collecting her pension but when the weather is bad cannot get to the bank, but phones them up to tell them and says she will get in as soon as possible. If she overdraws even for 1 day she is charged £30 per day. Today she gets a phone call from the Bank today saying, this time they will condescend to refund her charges but they are not a weather bureau, and are not responsible for the weather, and in future if she overdraws she will be charged £30 per day, and they will not in future refund her charges. All she has to manage on is her pension she has no savings at all and lives in local authority housing.

She should use the Post Office to do her banking instead of traipsing along to the bank. Personally I'd have called up the local paper and gave them the story and if I'd have phoned up the banks Customer Seervice dept to see how they justify it.

In the uk it is possible for a pension to be paid straight into a Post Office account, the money can then be withdrawn at countless pay points nation wide in many ordinary shops all for free, bills can also be paid at these pay stations which are often at shops where the lotto is running, again all done for free.
The cost of this service is covered by the fact that the transaction monies are held over for a few days before the payments are honoured,
This means that any bill should be paid at the 'pay point' five days prior to due date as stated on the bill.
This is a great idea for folk such as those mentioned.
As for the bank well they are a business but £30.00 quid for a few days grace is a little bit heavy perhaps an overdraft would be the better way to go but they would most likely say no due to her age, it really is a matter of sorrow that the government deem POs as redundant in rural areas these days as so many older folk cannot get their heads around the modern ways of business.

At face value - it's a tad harsh. However, they do have a point. Its unfortunate that this is the world in which we live in now. That and, every time she does phone in, there're a whole number of actions that they would have to do which are audited, escalated and managed etc. It's not just the case pushing a button. This would have been tolerated in the time of James Herriot but not online click and whizz.

There are however options that are potentially open to her which could be explored by herself, those around her or in discussion with the bank. Direct debits potentially, exploring the destination of her pension OR where her bank account sits. There MUST be an easier option.

At 85, she's likely to need some help - but this may not be the case. It may also be that there are options where she doesn't need to go to the bank at all - saving her the hassle of going every week. etc.

This wasn't supposed to be a lecture - sorry.

Hi, i think banks are so unfair, they know that they "have you over a barrel" the way they are treating their customers is wrong, and don't they realise that elderly people find it hard to cope as it is. They make me sick and i don't trust any of them.

Can't she get her pension paid in direct?

steffi
I am a recent pensioner, and I have my pension paid straight into the bank. I also arranged this for my late Father, after the local Post Office closed. It is more convenient than the Post Office, as the Bank probably has a cashpoint from which one can get cash out of hours. If this lady's mobility is limited, she could then go at her convenience.
Basically, the Banks aren't a charity. Is there any way Age Concern could help her?

all banks are going to be like this! no point in changing, their just as bad as each other.

Well all banks don't care weather your a 100 year old women or a 3 year old child they just enforce the rules even if they're injustice what you can do in that case is too find out where you can complain about and you're heard by people that can change this a complain box would be just perfect !

Banks are very greedy. I would talk to the band president and tell them what is going on and i think it would be ok. and they would work it out.

Obviously it sucks if you're the lady, but if the bank let everyone overdraw all the time, they'd have no money to give anyone. I've overdrawn because I'm a poor college kid paying for school, and I didn't expect them to do me any favors; that's the way businesses work.

BeenAroundTheBlock
Basically the bank would be giving her a free loan. It is a hard luck story and all, but the bank is not a charity, they're a business. I'm sure the bank could provide overdraft protection, for a fee of course.

There should be a way for her to have her pension automatically deposited. Failing that, she should keep a small cushion in the account, enough to tide her over for a few days when the weather is bad.
