Carol | A random 1,000 dollar deposit in my bank account? |
I just checked my online statement, and I see where there was a direct deposit for 1,000 dollars...I have no idea where it came from. What should I do?
I'm serious, this is weird. I don't really want to call my bank, because, what if they see it is a mistake, and take it away? |

1. A TAX REFUND MAYBE
OR CALL THE BANK BECAUSE THAT IS WEIRD YOUR INFORMATION COULD ALSO BE IN DANGER. DON'T SPEND IT BECAUSE IF YOU GET CAUGHT AND LATER YOUR ACCOUNT MAY SHOW $1000 OVERDRAWN IF YOUR NOT CAREFUL. |

same thing happened to us, the thing is, if you keep it and spend it, then they catch it down the road, no matter if it is a day or a few months, theyll make you pay it back...
better to just ask the bank where it came from...
could it be a rebate check? |

Call the bank. If it's a mistake, the money isn't yours and needs to be taken out before you do something utterly stupid and withdraw it. Maybe it is yours. However, if it isn't and you spend it, you will be liable for it and interest. |

Call the bank and question the deposit. If you're gonna be a thief, make sure you can retire from it. |

Call the bank. Of course they'll take it away - but they will anyway, when they find the mistake - and they will find it. If you spend it, you'll have to come up with money to pay it back. If you didn't they can sue you , and they WILL win, probably with extra costs to you. You know it isn't yours. Just call them. Otherwise someday soon they'll find it, take it back, and if you've spent it, you'll have a lot of bounced checks since your account will be $1000 short and you won't have enough to cover what you've written.. |

You need to call your bank there is obviously an error, the bank will evenutally look for it and remove the funds. Think of it this way, what if you deposited $1000.00 and it accidently got into someone else's account and you were not able to access the funds until the bank fixed the error (which could be a day or two). |

you should call the bank and just ask where the deposit is from? maybe someone put it there to surprise you? also, maybe you were owed it by the govt. it might be a rebate check?...call your bank. this is very rare to be a mistake...let us know what happened:) |
|

if ya know me t

The right thing to do would to be to go to your bank and ask them what your balance is and when they tell you, you can ask them for a print out of your account activities and it should show you what and where everything came from and went and you can go from there and make your own decision.
Also if you don't tell them about it and the bank catches it and finds out where it went you will owe the bank $1000.00. |

If it IS a mistake they're likely to find out sooner or later. They'll then ask you for it back. If you've spent it then it could potentially be prosecuted as theft. That might be unlikely, but it's possible. It's certain they'd try to get the $ back in some way.
I'd say call them & ask. Maybe it's a gift from your great uncle. If it's simply a bank mistake and you lose the $ you'll at the very least have better credibility with your bank. |

Don't even think of spending a cent of that! Investigate possible sources: return of a security deposit from a landlord you had set up on bill-pay? Your spouse? Do you have direct deposit for your payroll and could it be a bonus or commission? Do you have direct deposit of income tax refunds, federal and/or state? Check your bank statement thoroughly and see if you can glean any more info. If you cannot find the source, you will have to ask the bank for details on the deposit's source, but it should be in the statement, either the online statement or the full printed statement. |

That's exactly why you should call the bank. The money isn't yours, which means it belongs to someone else.
You need to call the bank because
1) It's not your money, the person may need it back
2) Someone else may have access to your account, which means they can put money in, or take money OUT
3)You may be a victim of identity theft
4) You have no idea where this money came from, or who it cam from. What if this implicates you in a crime?
Call your bank. |

They will notice it sooner or later, if it was a mistake. If you spend it you will have to pay it back and risk criminal charges though they deposited the money into your account. |

The bank will realize this mistake, whether you call them or not. The bank will reverse the deposit and possibly cause your account to become overdrawn and checks to bounce. You will be responsible for paying back the $1000 as well as any fees incurred for being overdrawn or from checks bouncing. If you take the $1000 out of your account, you could face felony charges since you are well aware that the money is not yours. Trying to keep the money in any way, shape or form is stealing.
I believe that someones direct deposit info has been entered incorrectly and their deposit has gone into your account. If you do not call the bank, then the customer who is looking for this $1000 will and the bank will fix the mistake.
