Joy | ATM theft?? |
Found out today that someone went to a branch of my bank in LA ( I live in San Diego) and withdrew $700 out of my account using the ATM there. I am curious if anyone knows how this happens? My card never left my possession and I never have told anyone my pin. The bank is recrediting my account but I don't want this to ever happen again and don't know what to do to avoid it. Thanks for your help. |

This form of theft is very common in Sweden this often done by professionals criminals!
Here is how they do this they often plant a camera in the ATM were you withdraw at, and they put some kind of a machine that copy's your cards information in the card placer. When they get all the information including your code with the help of the camera they just withdraw money with copy of your visa card and the password they got!
You can avoid this from happenings by making sure your look for any suspicious cameras and card placing look a like machines in the ATM's you withdraw money from! |

close that account and move to another bank.
Often bank records are stolen and the thieves use the info ( twice in the past 5 yrs our banks info has been stolen....they take the computers and you're stuck with the muck...)
put flags on all your credit reports and make a police report, for a record of the theft. |

there is a fake keyboard that they uses to obtain your pin.
it is just a piece of similar keyboard to the atm and place on top of the real one.
This is how they obtain the pin.
As for the card, i really don't know |

WEll there are hackers that can hack department store computer sytems and get your info. I work in a bank and have customers come in with the same issues. They then turn around and hack into an atm or get your pin somehow through the hack.
If I were you I would request a new card from the bank..at no charge they can get you a new one with a new number. |

Did U use the ATM outside if so then it's possible for someone 2 get they put something in the machine that gets all your info once you leave then they do the transaction that's why I always do mine inside where it's locked & only I'm there or I'll get it after shopping the bank was able 2 tell it wasn't you due to the cameras your lucky they put the money back 4 U |

Probably copied the card with a card reader and used a fake keypad which recorded your pin. Change ATM locations. |

It's good that you filed a Reg E claim right away to get your money back.
ATMs don't give $700.
There are a bunch of scams out there.
WAMU canceled my debit card because of fraud that was happening at a gas station where I went to. I was not affected, but they canceled my card anyway. |

Avoid using your debit card on the Internet or any department stores that constantly have new employees. Definitely avoiding or never use on the Internet. I am a banker and we see a lot of debit card abuse. Never hand your debit card to anyone. If you cannot see your debit card when checking out don't use it. Never ever let someone walk off with your debit card to take care of your bill. Debit cards do not have the same protection as credit cards because a debit card is cash transformed into plastic. Cash from your checking account. |

The ONLY way to avoid it is to NOT have an ATM card.
There are many ways this could have been done. SOME are listed on other answers.
I would need to know more about WHERE the ATM's you use are located, such as:
Do you use ONLY the BANK ATM or do you use others in stores?
Do you use "private" ATM's? (Many ATM's in convenience stores, etc. are privately owned)
Did you remember to take your receipt with you?
And of course there is always the possibility of somebody "tapping" the connection line between the ATM and the Bank if it is not AT a bank location.
Be GLAD that is all they got, and that the bank made a refund. |

your card was compromised at some point.... may be a store you shopped at, or restaurant you paid at... paying for your gas.... or even at an ATM.
Make sure when swiping your card, the device looks sound... if it looks as if it was tampered with then most likely it was... criminals can slip little devices between the card reader, pick up your micr number and make their own card with your info... with small cameras, they can pick up the numbers you key in when entering you pin...
if your bank blocks your card... and issues you a new card this should keep any other charges from the particular fraudulent situation from happening... be very cautious in the future... |
