pinkisluv17 | Affording an apartment? |
Generally, how much more than the cost of your apartment should you be making a month?
For example...if your apartment costs $750/month how much should you be making a month to be able to really afford the apartment and your expenses? I know this varies from person to person depending on their spending habbits but I'm talking about bare minimum. Additional Details Oh if this helps any this will be my first apartment...I'm only 18. So, I won't need to save for retirement quite yet :)...and I don't need to pay for kids or anything. I will also probably be getting a little bit of help from my parents though not much. |

I know that last time I was looking for an apartment, the leasing agents were asking for a monthly income that was at least 3 times more than the cost of renting. I don't know how they come to that conclusion. I think that it is a good estimate, it allows people to have enough to make the bills and some to spare. You shouldn't have to spend your whole paycheck in basic bills, it could leave you on the street with any unexpected bill. |

very simple, google a "debt to income ratio calculator." There are millions of them free to use on the web. |

You should be able to pay your rent within two weeks of work. I've done this, and personally, I'm more comfortable with one week. If you can pay your rent in a week, you're golden! |

If the income is triple your rent you should be fine. If its only double then life can get difficult. Especially with these gas prices!!! |

A general rule would be 3 times your monthly rent, to live comfortably. |

your rent should be no more than 1/3 your monthly income |

To give you a quick number, try to go for 2x your rent. That would keep u pretty safe and living comfortably.
But if you really want to know more exactly, carry around a small notebook with you for like 2 or 3 months and write down everything u buy and see how much it averages out each month. then take that and add $100 to it and the rent, and thats how much you should be making at least, just to be safe. |

First figure your other costs. These can include car note, insureance, cell bill, credit cards, etc. Then figure in the cost per month of the apartment as well as utilities and things like internet and cable. I would say you should be making at least $2,000 per month.
750 apartment
100 electric
100 gas
100 phone/internet/cable
--------------------------------------...
1050 total
Then add your other expenses. $2,000 may even be a little conservative. $750 is quite expensive for a 1 bedroom apartment. If it has more than one room, get a roommate. |

well when you get the apartment, you need to pay the last month, this month and next month, so pretty much $2250, some will take payments though. I'd say to live comfortably you should make around $1500, if you don't smoke or drive alot, cause that costs alot. $2000 should be pretty good though. |

bring home after taxes, at least 1800. Dont forget: Utilities, car, phone and groceries, plus you need to save 10% for emergency and retirement. |

$1100, you need to think about food gas, phone, electric, car ins.
and i would say that much if you don't have a car payment, cable or internet and don't spend money on your self at all pretty much. you should get a roomate if you think you'll have trouble paying your bills, just make sure it's someone responsible you can stand living with. |
