My mum already gets DLA for me as I have Asperger Syndrome, but as I have just turned 16 I am wondering whether I would be able to claim anything.
Asperger Syndrome has caused my life to go very wrong. I ended up in a mental hospital twice in one year due to depression and self harm but will be getting discharged next week (Wednesday).
I want to start paying for myself and I would rather get the DLA myself and pay my mum rent. Most of it gets spent on me anyway but I as I said I'd prefer it if I got the DLA myself.
Do I have to wait until I'm 18 ? Or can I get it now ? If I do start getting it myself would my mum still be entitled to some ?

Just to let the people that have no idea know...I've been looking for a job for weeks. Everywhere's aksing for experience and qualifications and as I spent most of the time in a hospital I have no qualifications or work experience.
Get a clue.
Also, unless you really have no idea about mental halth and disabilities such as Asperger Syndrome...you'll find it comes in different severities - so just because your "mates" can manage it I cannot. Especially seeing as I have no qualifications due to being held against my will at a hospital.
Get...a....clue. |

Weather you can or cant is erelevant at this stage. You should WANT to work. You think, ok ive got an illness yay!!! what does the government owe me. I know 5 oeople with the same illness, one with a very severe case and they have worked their whole lives. Be a MAN, you will want kids and a relationship one day, your kids will think you are a bum. One day you child I am sure will have a frien whos father has the same illness and your child will ask: "Dad why dont you work and my friends dad does?". Your only legitimate answer will be "because I'm lazy and the government will pay me to do nothing whilst other hard working people with the same illness pay taxes to fund my living. Isnt it great son?" You need to grow up, be a man and get a job. The benefits system should not be abused, if you can work then do it. Dont even think of saying you cant work. Even if your illness prevents you from doing your prefered job in life, there will be hundreds of other jobs you can do. Do not play the benefits system. You are living for free on others hard earned money that gets taken away in taxes. If it wasnt for people like you we wouldnt pay so much in Tax. It annoys me that your first question is not "I have an illness and want to know what jobs I can do." Instead you are asking: "Im 16 now, what can I get for free? I want money for doing nothing but dont worry ive got a lame excuse so its ok". Be a man, Look for a job and exaust all other possibilities before claiming DLA. |

You would have to be 18 to claim benefits in your own right. Until you are 18 your parents would claim them on your behalf. |

why are you trying to find out here, the only people who can help you are where the allownce comes from, If your mum has looked after you with this disability why all of a sudden do you need to have the money yourself. have you spoken to her? can you speak to her about this.or do you just want to pay her rent and perhaps put the rest in your pocket, as you say most of it get`s spent on you, are you looking tor the rest of it, sorry to be brutal but that`s what it`s coming over like. |

DLA is normally paid to a parent until the qualifying young person reaches 16. A new claim form is usually issued at that time and you would need to sign this yourself unless your parent is your appointee.
The DLA is payable to you. If you have an award of Middle or High Rate Care then your mother, provided she is not earning more than £100 pw, could get Carers Allowance.
You may also be entitled to Employment and Support Allowance if you are not able to work because of your disability.
I am shocked at the other answers to your question. DLA is not payable because of the disability but because of the effect that disability has on your ability to self care or be mobile.
Your illness can affect people in so many different ways and people should not judge you.
Also there is a lot of help available these days from the Job Centre. If you made a claim for ESA you would be required to attend interviews to see if you can do some work. This can be helpful and lead to work suitable for your disability. Help is available, you just need to access it. |
