It's a scam. Contact your local Postmaster, being that they contacted you via the U.S. Mail system. The Post Office has special police type folks that deal with this type of scam. |

This is a major scam. Do not cash the check and do not send them any money.
The check is a forgery and while it may "clear" your bank in a few days, once the company who's account they sent it from is notified, you will be out both the money you cashed and the money you sent.
SCAM
The company I worked for had their account forged and checks got cashed (about 5) before a hold was placed on the account and new numbers were assigned.
If you really are thinking this is a real check, call the bank and verify it with them |

This is a scam. If you try to cash the check, one of several things will happen:
1. They will see it as a fake check and let you know.
2. They will "deposit" the check with a five day hold. The check will bounce. You will be charged a bad check fee.
The person who sent the check is counting on you depositing the check, seeing it in the account and not realizing that a hold is on the check until it clears (which it will not). Then they want you to send some amount to them. That amount will clear their account. I am sure they are in some other country where you cannot prosecute them.
Put the check up on a wall as a trophy and curse them when they call you back. |

A friend of mine just got a check for 45K and wanted him to deposit it and send them a $1000 back. The check is a fake. Tiffany you have to be the stupidest person on the planet!!!!!!!!! you sent them your SS# and checking numbers and pin #. I guess what they say is true, there's a sucker born every minute. You just screwed your life up for years to come. |

Please dont do it i got a check that was from Texas State Bank and it looked just like a real check but i called the Texas State Bank and with the numbers on the check they said it was fraud please dont do anything. |

Scam. Do not ever cash a check for someone you don't know. Especially if they promise the winnings for a lottery. It is an absolute scam. Take the letter an the check to your bank and tell them you think it is a scam. They should have a department that tracks fraud. Tell them to call this department and go over it with them.
I work at a credit union and this is almost word for word and dollar for dollar what we described as a representative fraud example in a training last month.
If you do decide to risk it, deposit the check and let it sit there, or have the bank put a hold on it, for over a week until it clears. This may take 21 days if it doesn't clear at first.
Also, you can have your bank call the bank on the check to see if it is a valid account. This doesn't mean it is a good check, (it could be stolen or simply NSF) but it if it isn't a real account you will know it is a fraud. |
