Am I overreacting - should I cosign loan for sister?
Hello,

My sister who is 10 years old than me, I'm in my 20's wants me to cosign a loan for her for a car. The car is only going to be $100-$200 per month in payments. She says she will make the payments. What am I getting myself into - my car is paid off (college grad gift from parents) so I don't know much about loans. I always said I would never cosign anything, in a way, I feel forced by my family. Am I overreacting? Will this loan affect ME when I want to get an apartment or go back to college for an advanced degree? Thank you.

Do not cosign a loan for anybody, especially family. When you cosign a loan, you become responsible for the entire amount of the loan if the borrower (your sister) does not make her payments. People who need cosigners are people who have a history of either not making payments on time or not making payments at all OR they are people without a credit history and those people are generally age 18-25. Since your sister is in her 30s, my guess is that her credit history is terrible. If you were to cosign a loan with her, your credit history becomes tied to her credit history. If her credit score is bad, then her score will drag YOUR score down. The fact that you feel forced is a direct message from your brain that this is a BAD idea but you already know that. If your parents won't cosign for her, why would anyone expect you to cosign.
You are not overreacting at all. This could directly impact your ability to get an apartment AND it could affect your ability to pay for college for your advanced degree.
LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION, it will always tell you the truth.

never co-sign for any one especially family. I see it all the time. Bad feelings can result any way. By co-signing this note will affect your credit if she does not pay for darn sure. Many people get themselves in a crack doing this as they are call by the lender when it goes into default.

Never co-sign for anyone, whether it's family or friends because they will never pay you back and it will probably be the last time you'll be on speaking terms with them.

If you co-sign for the loan you are responsible for the loan if your sister doesn't make the payments. If it were me, I would not co-sign. Your sister is an adult.

NEVER co-sign for ANYONE. If they lender is asking for a co-signer, your sister has already been DENIED the loan. They are willing to give YOU a loan and allow you to give your sister the money. You WILL have to pay when she defaults. Believe the person that gets paid to loan money when they tell you she WILL default. Asking for a co-signer is telling you she WILL default.

if she is 10 years older, she should have plenty of credit ability to do this on her own.

if she is unable, there must be a reason why.

And, yes you will be affected by your name being on the loan.

Pengy
Yes it will affect you even if she does make the payments on time. Why? Because the loan will be listed on your name and go against the credit to debt ratio you have. Know this because I co-signed for both my kids cars. And my score is down some because of the debtload. If she goes 30 days late you also get the hit. If the family is pushing this let one of them co-sign. My advice is do not do this, unless you can easily make the payments, and have no other debt listed.

If she is late on her payments, it will affect you.

Do you have any doubts that she will not make payments on time? If she falls behind at all, your credit score will fall because of her. It seems that she may not have stellar credit since she needs a co-signer in the first place. I would be careful if I were you. You have your whole life ahead - keep your credit score under the utmost scrutiny and don't take it for granted. Don't feel forced by your family - tell them that your credit belongs to YOU and not your sister.

Do it if you really trust her. Otherwise your credit will be affected if she doesn't pay her bills. It can affect you in getting a job or going to colleges. If there are people who can truly guarantee that the car will be paid for, its more secure than if the car is going to a person with an unstable income.

she has bad credit that is why they need she need cosigner. if she default they will come after you for balance owed. don't be a fool it will damage your credit rating.

Does your sister have a good dependable job...is she good with money or has she ever been in debt, does money go through her hands quickly....Only you can answer these questions because you are family, remember if payments are not kept up you will be responsible for them. Hope i dont see you on Judge Judy!! If you decide not to go for it, dont be bullied into it by others, your judgement and your finances should be your decision. If she defaults it could give you future problems.. DeeDee London X
