Am I really that cheap?
I work a lot and I save a good portion of my paycheck in retirement and savings accounts. I pay my regular bills (rent, utilities) plus extra on my credit cards to pay down purchases. But I have a really hard time buying stuff for myself like clothes, jewelry, and gifts for other people for no reason. I want to take a vacation and have a wedding but I can't justify the cost. We don't do without any neccessites but I watch everydollar so closely, it seems like there is no fun money left ever. My family thinks im cheap because I save rather than spend on stuff I don't need. I've been really poor before because so I always keep a security fund just in case. Do I need to let loose and make some impulse purchases or should I just keep saving and ignore what they say so I will be comfortable later on?

I don't think you're being cheap. You're just being a wise spender and spending money on what you think is truly important and necessary. If you don't really need it, you'll save up for it for when you really need it. But once in a while, you have to splurge a little to treat yourself and your family. They all deserve a break. As long as you don't do it all the time, feel free to splurge a little.

Also, don't think of yourself as being cheap, but think of yourself saving up money for you and your family's future.

Never spend beyond your means.
That said, you should enjoy your vacation and wedding.

My father chose to take his grandson's, my boys of course, to europe rather than leave them money in his will.
Why?
He said money can be lost in a bad deal, by theft, or in a law suit.
A wonderful memory, experience, education can be taken by no one.

saving is good having money for emergencies is good pay off your extortion credit card fees and use debit cards instead. Ignore what they say keep up the good work.

Dr. Deth
Ignore the idiots. You're a very sensible person. keep doing what you're doing. You'll be able to retire early and enjoy more of your life because you're preparing early and not spending foolishly. If I were 20 yrs younger, I'd ask you to marry me. 8)

laranita82
Well, you are watching out for your own financial future. If ever an emergency were to come up you would be able to take care of it. Also, you want to make sure that you always have that financial stability. It is easy to understand that you don't ever want to have to depend on someone else. You want to keep your independence.

Although, you should treat yourself every once in a while to something nice, like jewelry, clothes, ect. You don't want to be too cheap. It's okay to spend money every now and then. Just because you buy yourself something every now and again doesn't mean that you are going to go broke.

Do something for yourself but don't change your ways. There is nothing wrong with saving & watching your money. Thats a sign of maturity. But consider this....You dont blow your money & you take care of business, so You deserve something nice. Think of it like that and you wont feel like you're missing it. Also....costly weddings are for rich folks.

You'll derive some pleasure from owning those impulse purchases.

You'll derive some pain from having spent that money impulsively.

I suspect the pain is more acute than the pleasure for you - but only you know for sure.

They ought not be trying to spend your paycheck for you. I doubt there ever was a wife who, at the death of her husband, said "I wish he'd been more reckless with his money, and had bought less life insurance, so that I would be broke now."

If you get paid on the same day every 2 weeks then you should mark every day on your calender. You'll notice that at least 2 times a year you get an extra check.

For example. the 1st check of the month goes to bills and gorceries, the 2nd check goes to rent.

but i get paid every other tuesday. and I get paid 3 times in May and October this year. So guess what? I have 2x extra money to either spend on myself, saved christmas money, Car insurance premium or maintenance, etc.

Saving money right now is the best thing to do, cuz spending money like's it's out of style is pretty much, "out of style"

You need to balance your life. Saving is really important and it will result in having a better chance of a good life. But you also need to live for the NOW.
Don't buy things that you can't pay for but remember to save each year for those things you and your family are yearning for now. You can't have it all every year and every month but plan something good- save for it and then do it. everyone will have something to look forward to and each will learn a lesson for their life.

coxdpcl22
Patchey has her head on straight. Pay attention to her . It's good that your saving money like you are but as with anything it can be taken to extremes. It's also a good idea to treat you and your family once in a while. We all deserve some fun now and then.

If you are happy without these things and having money gives you more pleasure, that is fine, no matter what offers think. If you are unhappy without the things that you can afford but keep saving because you cannot help yourself, like an alcoholic cannot stop drinking, then you should spend more.

Also talk to the person you want to marry; if that person is not like you, it could be a problem, or a benefit if that person can use your money to buy you stuff that you want but cannot buy yourself.

Le Spartiate
You simply know how to deal with money. Usually its safe to save around 3 months of expenses in a saving account. Thats your safety.
Now, its not a good idea to spend a "good" portion of your paychecks in retirements. Its suppose to be a slight ammount. Should be less than 15 % of your income and remember that saving in a retirement funds make you save on taxes.
Always make sure to save a ammount of your paycheck for you, for entertaining. Its VERY important.

Otherwise, yeah, that would make you too tight about money. Cheap, literally.

nothing wrong with watching the money and not spending it foolishly, but remember you cant take it with you so do try to enjoy life's finer things from time to time. An occasional self treat will do you a world of good

darylsgirl1114
I think it's great that you have good saving habits!! I also am considered "cheap" because I prefer saving to spending. However, I've found that a good way to have some money that I'm forced to spend on myself is that every paycheck, my husband and I each get a certain amount of "fun money". I spend mine on whatever I want, or save it until there's something I really want. My husband spends his on whatever he wants to. It gives us the freedom to have our own spending money, and we still put plenty in savings.

Ashley your habits will carry you alot further in life in the black than most folks. So don't change your ways just yet. But yes, you could use a little TLC for yourself, even if it's a pedicure once a month. Get the works! It's is to die for! Ok, maybe you're into hair or nails or food, whatever! lol But treat your "soul" once a month. Soul food as my mom calls it!

Well saving for a rainy day is essential and i believe that getting ready for retirement early is good to... that's what I'm doing at least. At this point I wished that I have started earlier.
But other than that it's important to enjoy the fruit of your labor, so that working becomes meaningful and that you can feel some tangible returns for yourself (first and foremost) and then the others around you that you love.
You don't have to do the crazy spending spree so to feel that, but pamper yourself like a little treat to like unusual dinner places, or buy yourself a new h/p strap... a peticure... something like those.. it'll really cheer you up.
I treat myself to a movie, or get a friend or two to eat jap food.. sometimes I consider buying myself some BBT (big boy toy) :P
Hope this helps...
Take it easy ya?

I would save, but I would also spend a little on having some fun once in a while. It would relieve some stress. I agree though, you can't even go out to dinner and a movie without spending a ton of money. Save, spend wisely. So many people totally waste their hard earned money. This is why there are so many bankruptcy's and foreclosures...
